So, I connected my HP Envy 15t-j100 laptop (with Intel HD Graphics 4600) to my Samsung PN43D450 43-Inch 720p 600 Hz Plasma HDTV using a Dynex 4ft HDMI cable. The "duplicate displays" setting works fine, but none of the other modes work. If I try switching to "second screen only" or "extend displays", the TV screen comes up with a "mode not supported" signal. I want to use the TV as a monitor with the laptop lid closed, but I can't.

I've tried lowering the resolution and changing the modes manually in "display settings", but none of these seem to work with "second screen only" or even "extend displays".

do you have the intel HD graphics software installed?

I'm not familiar with it, but it could be that or whatever HP display software might be installed.... clashing with the windows screen setup.

you're certainly in the right place.... i do the same thing with my laptop (win 7) - and use the second screen only option so my laptop monitor turns off. but mine is a barebones win 7 image with no added software and a dedicated vid card with the NVIDIA control panel
