I own an Asus n55sl laptop and game on it frequently. The laptop is two years old and has been doing all my gaming fine for the past two years. The other day I decided to measure the temperatures of my laptop while gaming because the air coming out of the fan gets really hot.
I used msi afterburner to monitor the temperature here are the results bellow.

After two hours of gaming
GPU 75-77 degrees Celsius,
CPU: 80- 90 degrees Celsius

My specs are
Intel i5 2450m
Nvidia GeForce GT 635m
6GB

Something interesting I noticed is when the CPU was at 87-90 the air coming out of the vent felt cooler than when the CPU wan around 85. Can someone explain this to me?

Any way are these temperatures alright for gaming on this laptop? A friend of mine has a laptop with similar specs to mine but his is a Toshiba and he gets similar temperatures and has had his laptop for the same time as me.

There are some differences between laptops and desktops, and laptops are generally made to handle more heat than desktops. So I wouldn't say the temperatures are too high, especially for gaming. I would try keep the temps below 85C just by putting the laptop on a hard surface or making sure the airflow isn't blocked.
