Hi guys.

I'm planning to purchase this laptop.

ASUS: G74 Series G74SX-BBK8
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230352

I am purchasing it slightly used for $650.

I was wondering if the laptop is a solid choice as a replacement to my Desktop for on the go gaming.

My main concern is if the laptop, mainly the GPU, will last 4 or more years before going out of date and not able to play any more games coming out then.

Is this laptop good for the price? And is this laptop a solid gaming option.

Thank you for your time and suggestions.

-Allen

For the price its alright. The laptop is already almost 4 years old though. I don't really know how well it will even do with todays games, let alone another 4 years. I really doubt itll last another 4 years of current games. But if you could up your budget at all $800 can have a Lenovo y510, and $1000 should be able to get a new or refurbished g750 last years with 765m which is huge step up from yours in question. $1300 (yes double your budget) will get you an asus g750 jm current model with 860m which will play almost any game on high, and that should last 4 years.

I may be wrong but the only fault that I saw for the future in this laptop is the graphics card.

If I am able to upgrade the GPU and get an SSD at a later time for cheap, would everything else still be good?

First one is better, and you cant upgrade cpu/gpu on asus cards, theyre soldered onto the board itself. That said, its still good, for the price. It is already almost 4 years old, so if you want 4 more years of normal gaming and such, then you'll need to buy a new one that will give you 4 years. But if you want minimal games like low medium settings at 720p it should be able to do it on most non demanding games

here are the benchmarks for your first option:http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-560M.48313.0.html
you won't play 900p maximum on all the big games.
you can play high-ultra 720p for most games - things like BF4 you may need to take off AA and go to medium, but it can still definitely play.
