I actually bought this laptop only for the CPU, but decided to try to repair it once I got it. This is a question for the TRUE GEEKS, because I hate seeing the response on fix-it sites where they jump to "replace the motherboard". I tried hooking it to an external display and nothing.. I know some would say the graphics is bad on the motherboard, but we all know that RAM, CPU and other things could still be the culprit. I figure there's no use trying to test the display since an external won't work. I tried changing out the RAM, but I haven't tested the CPU in another laptop. Like I said, it sounds like it's booting. I put UBCD disk in it to see if I could use that to find the problem, but it won't boot to the disk either, but it sounds like it completes reading the cd. OK, so I know a lot of simple sites would then say "replace the motherboard". Is there anyway to bypass the graphics, use a card or something to see if that's the problem. When a manufacturer gets a board back, they must test it in some way. I am open to imagination.

If it's a card and not a soldered chip then you may be able to swap out the display adapter/video card. Chances are that the screen - whether internal or external - is routed to the dedicated graphics, in which case you won't be able to "bypass" it.

When manufacturers receive a bricked motherboard, they either attempt to reflow or they scrap it and a recycling company salvages it.

Why are you against replacing the board?
