DVI-HDMI no sound help

right click the volume icon on your desktop > click Playback Devices > Click on Headphones or whatever audio device is detected, and set it as the default device.
if this doesn't work, are you certain you've installed the audio driver for your motherboard?

dvi-d does support audio and most graphics cards support audio out via dvi. it is only the earlier generations where it wasnt supported.
however, where are you trying to connect your headphones? to a 3.5mm headphone jack on your monitor or on the back (or front) of your pc?
the fix would depend on how you want to connect things:
-if you were trying to do it on your monitor i could see why you were worried about dvi but as long as you set the dvi output to your default audio device it should be fine. normally the headphone jack is recognized automatically when you plug in but if its not then there might be a monitor setting (using the monitors on screen display) enabling or disabling the port.
-if you were trying to connect up using the green 3.5mm jack on the front of your tower pc then it doesnt matter how you connect up to your monitor. i would make sure you have your sound drivers installed and that you have the front jack hooked up properly to your motherboard. while your headphones should be automatically recognized you may need to select them as your default audio device if they are not.
-if you were trying to connect up using the green 3.5mm jack on the back of your computer then similar to above however you dont need to worry about a the cable hooking up to the motherboard part.
also make sure you dont have windows sound or your source (lets say youtube) set on mute or low volume.

Hi I know this was a few weeks ago so you may have sorted it now.
The reason you aren't getting sound is because your TV/Monitor is expecting to get the sound from the HDMI cable that you have plugged in. Not all graphics cards will provide sound over the DVI or even HDMI ports without first getting the sound from your motherboards sound chip.
I have just purchased two Samsung 27@ TVs to use as monitors and when I connected both via DVI-HDMI cables to my graphics card (I have a GeForce 9600GT) I had no sound (I expected that to be the case, however). I used the 3.5mm jack cable from the monitor to my sound card but there was still no sound. I had to go into the TVs service menu and activate the analog audio input on HDMI port. This prevents the TV from trying to play the sound from HDMI and instead uses the 3.5mm socket. Perfecto!
