Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 (http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/inspiron-mini1012/pd) running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Everything works fine except the speakers. When I run Windows Media player, I can hear the music if I plug in a headset, but I can not hear the music through the laptop speakers.

So, my first question is - does the Mimi even have speakers?
If it does have speakers, any suggestion on how to figure out the problem?

Head set works - speaker does not.

Thanks,

Dennis

Yes, the Dell Inspiron Mini1012 does have speakers. I'm assuming you haven't used them before so I've got to ask, was this purchased "used"? If not, a little back history of the machine may help - Age? Disassembled and cleaned ever? Disassembled at all? Any parts replaced or upgraded?
You can look in Control Panel >> Device Manager >> Sound, Video and Game Controllers to make sure your internal speakers are the default devices for sound

This belongs to a buddy of mine. And yes, he purchased it used and he has no idea if it has been disassembled and cleaned.

Based up on the Service Tag (2YYH0MA), Dell says the computer was shipped on 6/5/1020.

I looked in the Control Panel >> Device Manage >> Sound, Video, and Game Controller but cold not find were you set the default speakers using this approach.

However, I did look in Control Panel >>Sound. On the Play back tab, I have:
1. Digital Audio (2 Hi Def audio devices - not plugged in) with a red radio button on the icon.
2. Speakers High Def Audio Device - Default Device.

When I highlight Speakers, I can click on the Configure button on the bottom of the Playback Tab window.

In the configure, It shows the Audio channels: Stereo.

When I click on the Test button on the bottom of the page, the Left and Right speakers show "sound" coming out of them. But no sound from the internal speakers.

In the device manager, when I click on Sound, Video, and game controllers, the following is displayed:
High Definition Audio Device
High Definition Audio Device

I right click and choose Properties. On both and I have a window with the following tabs:
General - This tell me that the device is working properly
Driver - with the Driver Detail, Update Driver, Disable, and Uninstall buttons
Detail - which shows all of the properties in a drop down and their associated values.

As far as I know, the drivers are up to date. As I said, the head set work just fine. Just not the speakers.

I have already checked the task bar icon Volume mixer are not muted. That was one of the first things I checked, but I will check again.

I kind of guessed the speakers were messed up. I guess I will trying to disassemble and see if I can fix the problem.

Thanks,

Dennis

I asked about the history and I found out the previous owner had taken it apart. My buddy does not use the speakers enough (normally uses headset) so it was not worth the effort to to take apart and possible break something else.

I want to thank everyone for their help.

I am having the same issue. Dell Inspiron mini 1012 upgraded from xp to 7 home 32 bit. No sound.

I have installed the latest audio driver. There are options for a microphone and a headset, so I would assume they would work if i were to try them.

However, the speakers are not detected at all anywhere (not even in device manager). I upgraded the bios from A7 to A12 and the speakers did beep (very loudly at 4am)

I have uninstalled the driver, reinstalled it, ran dell system detect to update drivers, ran dell diagnosis - Nothing.

Had this problem a few years ago on another laptop. Never found an answer

I would really appreciate an answer
