When connecting a 3.5mm plug with a 2-RCA plug Y-cable to pre-amps, which connection is the center and which is the sub?

why dont you test them by plugging one in and running windows speaker test? if it fires when its highlighted on screen then you have the right one.

i've seen a source which says the red rca is sub... however that could differ based on how the cable was made.

Actually, I am going the opposite direction - PC surround speaker system to home theater processor/preamp. I can do trial and error, but would like to avoid potential speaker damage. Was hoping a hardware guru here would know which is connected to the plug "tip" and which to the "ring". Hard to tell from schematics I have found online. Thanks...

all the diagrams that i've seen point towards subwoofer being ring and center being tip. this falls hand in hand with left being tip and right being ring which you can find a pinout of more easily. this means that the red rca should be subwoofer.

HOWEVER, that doesnt mean that the cable you buy is laid out in this manner just that it should be. depending on where you bought the cable it could be junk and backwards. it wouldnt be the first time i've seen something like that happen. you can check by using a multimeter and doing a continuity test (touch one probe to the rca red inside and one to the ring) if it beeps you're golden.
