i went to install windows XP on my blank laptop (2008ish Toshiba satellite) and I got this message
Welcome to setup
this portion of the setup program prepares Microsoft (R) windows (R) XP to run on your computer

1) to set up windows XP now, press ENTER
2) to repair a windows XP installation using recovery console, press R.
3) to quit setup without installing windows XP, press F3.

I pressed ENTER and got this message

Setup did not find and hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacture-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3

What do I do?

1) 2) 3) stand for dot points and no I don't want to buy a manufacture-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Your first step should be cracking open the BIOS and making sure the drive is being found. If it isn't open it up and check the cable connections. If it still isn't you may need to get a new drive.

If it is being detected by the BIOS you may need a non standard controller driver from toshiba to get it running.
