I have a 2.1 and a monitor with built in speakers, is there a way to combine them to create surround?

I have a Dell XPS 420 Monitor and speakers, is it as simple as putting the monitor speakers into the regular Audio part then plugging the 2.1 into the rear audio port or is this a futile task? the computer does support 5.1 but this would technically be 4.1
