Hi.
I am new to the whole sound stuff and i need serious help with something.

Ok, so firstly, i have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme audio for a sound card. If i buy 5.1 computer speakers, like logitech z506 or z906 or z5500, will i have true 5.1 sound (voices from center speaker, ambient sounds from the rest) ?

For example, i play a BluRay movie that has lossless 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio on my computer. Will my speakers give this 5.1 sound? Do i need a decoder or something? Do i need to buy, like, a 5.1 home theater system (those 500-600€ things) and then throw away the player and keep only the speakers (as i have a bluray drive on my computer)?

In short, if i buy 5.1 computer speakers and play a bluray movie that has some type of lossless dts audio, will i get that true 5.1 from the speakers?

yes. your card supports up to 7.1 sound.

yes. if you buy a 5.1 computer speaker set you will get true 5.1 sound from surround sound sources.

i'm not sure what version of windows you have... but windows 7 media player works fine with dvds (but the player is a bit clunky) but for bluerays you will need a player software. you could use this for dvds too. i would suggest powerdvd (whatever the latest version is) as it works pretty decent.

you do not need to buy a home theater system if you do not want to. however, if you want BETTER sound than a pc speaker set it might be worth looking into home audio components (but not those all in one box sets normally).

in short, yes provided you have software which can actually play the blueray movie (like powerdvd13).

---

what do i use?

i have a blueray drive in my pc but i normally use my ps3 for playback (its easier and i have a remote). i use a receiver with 5.1 system for sound for my pc, ps3, ps2 and other input devices i connect. quality is much better than some z506 level speakers (actually an old set of x540's) that i used to have) but the price of course was also much more than the set i had before.

--

if you need additional advice just ask some questions.

I will apologize in advance, as a huge amount of noob questions and stupidity will follow. Please forgive me.

I've read around a bit and, if i got this right, raw, lossless DTS-HD sound can only pass through HDMI cables. So, optical is not enough.
Apparently, the Z506 does not have HDMI port.

Another thing is, no sound card is capable of decoding types of DTS sound, except two: The Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 and the Auzentech AZT-XFHTHD X-Fi sound cards. As far as i understood, if i did at all, these two can decode DTS audio like DTS-HD MA etc. They also have HDMI ports.

Now, hypothetically speaking, say i dump my newly bought Sound Blaster and i buy the Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 (is it even compatible with my mobo, the asrock z68 extreme3 gen3?). I also buy some 5.1 speakers that have hdmi port, like the Logitech Z906.

Finally i get an HDMI cable for the DTS audio. Would i connect this cable from the sound card to the subwoofer or what?

Is that a way to play the raw sound?

This Asus xonar card comes with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre which i guess plays BluRay movies. To afford all this, of course, i'd probably need to win the lottery or break into someone's house given the current economy status of Greece, but i guess i'll manage.

Last thing, i don't quite understand the whole "receiver" concept. What exactly does the receiver do?

for simplicities sake i'll try to break this up into sections....

--

i am not sure why you mentioned optical (perhaps because the z906 has it??). the only thing which needs to be able to handle the transfer of the digital signal is anything between your source and the DAC (digital analog converter). the source is the program reading the disk (lets just say your motherboard is the source) and the DAC is the soundcard (a soundcard is essentially a dac, amp with a few other electronics on it).

it exports an analog signal to the speakers which causes them to fire. the 3.5mm connections do not need to handle any special formats as they are after the DAC unit and are just transmitting the electrical signal to drive the speakers.

now where does optical come in? if you bypassed your soundcard and were exporting the information via optical to be used on either an external dac+amp, receiver or speaker with an internal soundcard. optical only supports uncompressed sound in stereo (2.0) and for surround needs to use dolby digital live (DDL) format. honestly hooking up via optical would only be good if your onboard sound is bad.

--

now, what you say about not all soundcards handling all formats is true. however... do realize that if you have a $50 soundcard and $100 speakers then it doesnt really matter if the soundcard is only decoding a DD signal instead of DTS or DTS-HD as you likely will not hear much of a difference anyways. if you had $400 speakers and a $50 soundcard then you probably would. pairing a $250 soundcard with a $300 computer speaker set is also pretty outlandish.

--

yes it looks like you have a pci x1 slot so that soundcard would work. there are likely better options than going that route though.

afaik the z906 has optical, coax and 3.5mm inputs. i just looked at the specs and see nothing about hdmi.

in any case if it did have hdmi all you would be doing with that $250 soundcard is completely bypassing it and using it as a way to pass data through on hdmi. basically you might as well light a few fifties on fire and dance around in a circle. now, if you hooked the z906 up via 3.5mm to that soundcard then yes there is a point to the purchase and it will sound better than on a cheap soundcard. while i dont agree that its really required for just computer speakers (regardless of how well rated they are) you might actually hear a difference.

--

by raw i'm guessing you mean "full quality" and no, none of what you mentioned so far is really an ideal way to do this.

now if you used a soundcard which supported DTS-HD or other lossless formats and hooked up pc speakers to it via 3.5mm cables then yes. however... on pc speakers would you even be able to hear the difference between that and good compressed (or other format) sound? unless you are an audiophile that answer would be no.

--

i've never heard of totalmedia theatre. i've used powerdvd though and while not perfect its pretty decent.

it sounds like you are trying to spend a whole lot of money just to get "raw" sound as you put it. for the money you are thinking about putting out you could likely do better in sound quality than what you mentioned earlier (a receiver and speaker set would be better) or you could likely not even hear the difference when using a half decent soundcard and pc speakers. honestly it all depends if you're an audiophile.

generally the dac/amp part of a home theater system set should be about 25-33% of the cost of your entire system. for my own system i used a $500 receiver paired with $550 speakers and a $350 sub. i spent about 35% on my own however i really wanted the nice on screen display (which was only one the elite models at the time) and a few of the other features so i bought something a bit over what i actually needed.

now, while the same figures dont really hold true to pc speakers its similar. you wouldnt buy a $250 soundcard for $300 speakers unless you were a complete audiophile and absolutely needed perfect sound (which why are you buying pc speakers anyways if that is the case?). at most i would say a $100-150 soundcard (when paired with a z906 thats about $450 total). when the budget starts getting too high you start to encroach on territory which is better handled by the home theater market..

--

what is a receiver?

well if you want to see some photos of a setup you can see mine which is in my signature link. posted here for easy navigation: http://postimg.org/gallery/ql0xj0nu/

basically a receiver is a digital analog converter (DAC), an amplifier (AMP), a tuner (AM/FM radio), a switch (to swap between inputs), an equalizer (EQ) and some other electronics all packed into one box. a more simplistic explanation is that it allows you to attach multiple devices (pc, consoles, ipod, etc) and play them through the same sound system.

one nice benefit is that they take direct hdmi inputs (from your video card) and typically handle most formats of sound. from the pc you will get pulse channel modulation (PCM) sound which is pretty as perfect as sound is going to be. think of this as the "raw" sound you were talking about. there is no need for any special soundcards when going through hdmi.

i dont adjust volume on the pc typically. i just turn it down on the receiver. i also dont use any special equalizer settings i just change the receiver settings. to swap between inputs i just turn one knob. it really is quite handy.

now you dont really technically need a receiver but its more convenient for 5.1 sound. for 2.0 or 2.1 you could just use a soundcard and have some bookshelf speakers hooked up. technically you could just run multiple stereo 2.0 amps, one for each 2 speakers and connect it all up to a 5.1 soundcard but thats alot of wires and a bit messy. a receiver is more compact and not bad on price for what you get.

half decent 5.1 receiver costs start at about $200 for the basics. the lowest cost speaker set i can recommend off the top of my head is the energy take 5.1 classic at $350. thats about $500 and gets you into the world of true home theater.

--

as far as how are the z5500/z906 compared to the energy take classic 5.1 and a receiver?

better sound out of the energies and likely louder too. you dont need to go out and buy a soundcard but can use what you already have if you got a receiver. if you wanted to hook up other sources like a console, roku or other device its better/easier on a receiver.

the z906 is a bit cheaper though (not if you buy a soundcard!), doesnt require a receiver box (though it does have a control unit), and is a bit less complicated to set up.

--

my recommendations? well i'll hold off on that until you give a response to what i've said above.

First off, i can't begin to tell you how much i appreciate that you took the time to answer me. Thank you.

I understood most things about the receivers the way you described them, i can say they sound quite a nice deal.
My problem is, time and budget(yes, how can i demand perfect sound if im not willing to pay for it, {we get what we pay for}). Living in Greece, money suddenly becomes even a worse issue. Prices are elevated, and i don't think i can find a decent receiver for less than 160€.

Furthermore, i just searched literally every single greek site i could find, the Z5500 seems to be out of stock. On UK's ebay, new Z5500 cost 578€. Used ones i don't usually trust, but they're freaking expensive as well, including postage fees. USA's sites, well out of the question, postage and import charges exceed 120€.

So it's back to the Z906, of which the lowest price comes at 326€, mind it's in euros, so it's about 450$. So if i get a 200€ receiver and 320€ speakers it's a total of 520€, approximately. Which raises another question. Could i get something better with half a grand?

Another home theater system came to my attention while i was weighing my options. It's the BH9420P 3D BluRay Home cinema by LG.

Its price hovers around 470€. It supports all DTS types and it has HDMI inputs/outputs and all the likes. Power is 1100W. I think it has 9.1 channels.
This, for me, would be a great deal. It would save me a (lot?) of time, me, being a noob, time that is so scarce since i need to study for the final year of high school (btw, hoping to get accepted in medical school, just a fool's hope).

You, being the expert here, what's your opinion? I'm unaware of whether you're familiar with this LG home cinema im talking about or not.

Now, quality/price wise, what would be better? That home cinema i mentioned, or buying speakers, subwoofer unit and receiver separately? Have in mind a budget of around 500€. Less is always welcome of course lol.

EDIT: Damn, i almost forgot, your setup looks sick. I'm more than a bit tad jealous :p

no trouble.
the reason why we have these forums is to share infomation.

--

160eur (222usd) isnt a bad price point for low end but still half decent 5.1 receivers. completely up to you though if you feel comfortable spending this much cash on a receiver and more on some home theater speakers (you didnt list what the energy take 5.1 goes for in greece?).

yes, generally you do get what you pay for. i agree. however budget and your personal preferences have alot to do with it.

--

the z5500 is discontinued and has been for years. the z906 is its successor and while not as good its also a bit cheaper than the z5500 was. even in the usa the old z5500 is listed for huge prices (because of the greed of sellers and the hype and demand from buyers). not worth buying over here either.

you wouldnt buy a receiver if you went with the z906. you would probably get a soundcard (unless you stuck with the mediocre one you have now).

--

half a grand? do you mean 500usd or 500eur (big difference!) i'm guessing euro.

--

in most cases i would not suggest home theater in a box (HTIB) solutions. that LG set is one of these sets. i didnt delve into many reviews but the tiny bit i saw on youtube >click here< mentioned about a few issues and how it was too expensive for what it offered. the reason i personally dont recommend them is because they are often built cheaper than seperate components and sometimes they dont play nice with inputs from other sources (some hdmi input models dont support 5.1 only 2.1!).

also the vast majority of content is 5.1 so finding 7.1 or 9.1 content is hard. there are a few technologies to fake the rest of the channels in but on your budget i wouldnt pursue anything more than 5.1

--

time? if you bought a set of speakers like the energy take 5.1 and a receiver time isnt a real issue. all you need to do is run some speaker wire, hook things up and then run the receiver setup. this sounds like a warzone with gunshot like sounds, pops, lasers (seriously.. its odd) which auto times your speaker delay for ideal sound.

honestly once i ran the wires (1-2 hours of installing boxes and running wires through the walls) it took me 20 minutes to unbox and install everything. another 10 minutes to figure out how to run speaker setup and then a month to learn how to use the remote (kidding... but there sure are lots of buttons!)

you dont save any time going HTIB for setup.

--

now... you can definitely buy speakers seperately however for a first timer like you and with your budget you might be better off with a kit. again, i highly recommend going with the energy take 5.1 classic set as its pretty much the lowest cost kit (all 5 speaker and a sub) which actually sounds good. a more expensive option would be the klipsch hd theater (though not sure if thats available in the usa only). i know boston acoustics also makes a kit and they are okay speakers but i'm not sure about details on them. there are likely some other brands (from europe) that i'm not familiar with who have similar decent quality sets at a non-heart-attack price.

my suggestion would either be the

z906 + soundcard, or
ET Classic 5.1 + Receiver

of course the full system being a bit more costly but a bit better on options and quality as well as being able to be added to and/or upgraded in the future. supporting multiple devices is also nice if you want to keep it around for many years and use it for your living room.

--

thanks. its not laid out exactly how i would like it but this room is temporary.

as far as equipment is concerned, i'm very happy with it. its a huge difference from using computer speakers.

Alright, thank you. I'll keep looking around till i finally choose what to go with. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

One more thing. I know home theaters in a box are not as flexible or even reliable as buying the parts separately, but what would you look in one of those? Does the power play a big role? Is the manufacturer important?

I looked for this ET Classic 5.1, but surprisingly enough, wait for it, no greek shop sells it! Not online anyways. If this country's market had something wonderful called "variety", making a decision would be easier since my options wouldn't be as limited.

i'm not sure whats available in greece and to be honest i cant read greek so you'll have to do some browsing

well.. if i was looking for a htib set i'd get a good brand, make sure it has good solid reviews and make sure it handles surround sound from hdmi. this wouldnt be my first choice at all though. they do make a few sets which have full receivers in them but i'm not sure what the price would be for those sets in your country.

could you import items from other countries or are the import costs too high for that?

lso i'm not sure what the power standard is in your country.

--

i did manage to find a few interesting things on amazon.it and i know the uk has tons of good products but again not sure what shipping will be or import fees. you would be best able to advise on the status of greece.

also note if you see any 5.1 sets by denon, klipsch, yamaha or pioneer. (while the first 2 are generally good, the second two have a few decent sets mixed among some not so good ones).

For some reason, same things from same brands seem to be considerably more expensive on the ebay of UK. For something like a speaker set, postage charges are around £50-£60. Let alone the fact that many don't even ship to Greece.

Transatlantic deliveries, regarding big and heavy boxes, are insanely expensive. Add import fees to that and you end up paying 100-160€ just to get an item shipped to you.

Also, how do i know if it handles surround sound through hdmi? In the description it says it decodes DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD and a few others, doesn't that mean it will support the "raw" 5.1 sound? Do i need a receiver even if it says it can decode dts audio?

@sora There is a major site, on which almost every shop that has a webpage is registered. It's www.skroutz.gr .

Although it is in greek, it's pretty simple to use. Just type what you're looking for in the search bar in the middle of the page. If there are items with the same name in different sections, the category list will come up. Click on whatever you want, and the items will be displayed along with their prices on the right.

There are a few sites of course that one would need to browse individually as they're not registered in skroutz.

@ paliovouna

if you buy a htib set (the ones with a combo dvd/br/receiver) it might not say that it cant handle surround sound from other sources. you might need to look up and read the manual to find out. or look up user reviews on it. all i can tell you is that some definitely have such limitations since i've seen it before. normally its on the cheaper ones not hte more expensive ones.

i had a short look on that website. ugh... its so hard to find what i'm looking for and the choices you seem to have are really limited! i did manage to find a few items by using some brands i knew..

i did manage to find a polk audio set http://www.skroutz.gr/s/347032/Polk-Audio-TL1600-Home-Theater-System.html but once you add a receiver its going to be more expensive than your budget. it does get good reviews though and everything but the receiver is in the box.

i noticed a set by denon as well http://www.skroutz.gr/s/267796/Denon-DHT-FS5.html which is within budget and has everything even the receiver. while definitely good for someone new into the world of home theater it has a few shortcomings. the next step up in the dennon line would have been better but unfortunately i didnt see it listed! not sure about this one but its a "maybe".

i saw this one as well which is another maybe http://www.skroutz.gr/s/4171488/JBL-Cinema-610.html it would need a receiver.

i did see some individual speaker and sub prices which looked "manageable" so you could probably build your own system from locally available speakers. you would need to look up some of the brands since i've never heard of a few.

To get something clear in my head: These HTIB sets include speakers, bluray players and receiver(sound is decoded in the player, making it a receiver?) ,right?

So, right now, assume i have the speakers, bluray player(HTIB) and a screen of mine connected to the player. I play a movie with DTS-HD master audio, will it handle the sound?

What i want to say is, if i buy one of these HTIB sets, connect it with a tv/screen and play bluray discs through the player included, will these formats of HD audio be played? Like, forget i own a pc, i have nothing in my house but a bluray player and speakers from HTIB set and a screen, do i get DTS and the likes?

That's that. If you can make me understand the above you probably are a teacher, having the patience and the skill to help me lol.

Those Polk speakers seem very nice. I think i might end up buying those and staying without this shiny DTS sound. Later on, when i gather more money, i could look for a good receiver.

Also, if i may, what is the LCPM?

it appears my above posting somehow managed to pull the wrong link. the denon set should have been this one Denon DHT-1312XP http://www.skroutz.gr/s/4240997/Denon-DHT-1312XP.html?keyphrase=denon+5.1 i'll edit my post above to delete the wrong link (the middle one).

HTIB sets typically include speakers and a sub as well as one combination dvd/blueray/receiver box. its all normally built into one unit. this style is the one i like to avoid. you can find sets which include a receiver and i suppose they may fall under htib (like the denon) but they are different and not as limited as the rest. sometimes those sets dont have a blueray or dvd player too. those are more compareable to sets comprised of seperate components.

the sets that i was listing above are just speakers (except the denon) and would need you to buy a receiver to power them.

technically the combo box (dvd/br/dac+amp) of htib sets acts sort of the same as a receiver but in a very limited sense. those limitations are why i dont suggest them.

will it handle DTS-HD? that depends on if the receiver is able to decode it.

for the denon model listed above (after i gave you the right link) the answer is yes it can.

if you buy a receiver for the other speaker sets which has DTS-HD support then the answer will be yes it can.

speakers do not need to support any formats. all they do is play the signal from the receiver. the only thing which needs to be able to decode dts-hd is the receiver or if you have a htib combo box then the internal electronics and dac inside the box. if its and all in one box and has a blueray player then it probably does but it would be listed on the specs.

now, bringing your computer into the equation... if you played bluerays on it you would need the same thing: the receiver would need to support dts-hd. the program you would play the bluerays on (i suggest powerdvd13 or whatever is newest) should send it to the receiver no problem. honestly it would be acting just like a blueray player in this sense.

if you want to completely forget the pc, forget buying a receiver and just consider those all-in-one box sets (despite the negatives) would it play dts-hd audio from the blueray player? if its listed in the specification sheet under formats supported then yes. while i dont suggest this route since its not upgradeable, often shoddy build quality and all that... its definitely possible to go that route and still be happy. that is your choice to make not mine.

--

does that help your understanding ?

edit: those polk speakers would need a receiver to power the speakers. they arent an all in one set.

Pulse-code modulation (PCM) is a method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals. It is the standard form of digital audio in computers, Compact Discs, digital telephony and other digital audio applications. In a PCM stream, the amplitude of the analog signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals, and each sample is quantized to the nearest value within a range of digital steps.

Linear pulse-code modulation (LPCM) is a specific type of PCM where the quantization levels are linearly uniform.[5] This is in contrast to PCM using, for instance, A-law algorithm or μ-law algorithm where quantization levels vary as a function of amplitude. Though PCM is a more general term, it is often used to describe data encoded as LPCM.

PCM streams have two basic properties that determine their fidelity to the original analog signal: the sampling rate, which is the number of times per second that samples are taken; and the bit depth, which determines the number of possible digital values that each sample ca

PCM
What it is: A PCM track is an exact replication of the studio master, encoded on disc without compression. The benefit to this is that it maintains the purity of the source without any loss of fidelity that may come from compression. The downside is that an uncompressed audio track takes up a tremendous amount of disc space, which may (especially on single-layer BD25 discs) negatively affect the video quality of the movie. While the Blu-ray format is capable of utilizing PCM audio up to 24-bit resolution, studios may choose to encode at 16-bit resolution instead, depending on the bit depth of the original source or concerns about conserving bandwidth (downsampling a 24-bit master to 16 bits is technically not the same thing as compression).
Level of support: All Blu-ray disc players are required to support PCM audio.
Examples of discs that use it: Almost all discs from Sony and Disney, as well as selected titles from Lionsgate and other studios.

PCM is basically another lossless audio format which many disks use or which is used to send data which has already been decoded. it is also used quite often when you are on your computer transmitting sound to your receiver. its also used if you have a ps3 playing movies.

Thanks, i finally (and i mean it's been a pain in the butt for me) understand what's the case here.

I took a look at the denon htib, looks quite good and im almost tempted to buy it. But i find myself asking for your opinion, again.

Quality wise, is the denon htib the way to go, or is it better to put my computer in the game, buy those polk speakers and get a decent receiver later on?

This time i also have a question of another nature. These HTIBs, i suppose whichever come with bluray players, play most bluray discs, but, do they play BDXL discs? Those triple/quad layered bluray discs of 100/128GB? Do companies even use these for their movies? I think most movies that won't fit on one disc are split in two ones(ex. LOTR).

I know the bluray drive in my computer plays bdxl, and i fear that if i have an htib and i buy a bluray version of a movie i like, it'll be on a bdxl disc and i won't be able to play it.

the denon set looks alright and gets a 7/10 review, however, if you have the budget i would get something a bit nicer as it seems like it might be lacking in certain areas. its not really all that upgradeable given that the receiver has only 75w/channel amp capabilities and the speakers are only so-so quality. it does have dts-hd and a few features though which is why i said its an okay choice but i think you can do better.

i will repeat this a third time: if you wanted the polk speakers you would need to buy a receiver now not later. your pc will not power them. this is what the receiver is for. this is why i said its going to be over budget by quite a bit and why they might not be the best choice out of the lot. with a receiver added the total cost would be about 687eu which is a huge jump over what you wanted to spend. would it be worthwhile? probably, but thats not my call to make. its easy to keep stepping up in price as there is always something better.

a better choice would probably be the jbl cinema 610 for 359eur paired with the pioneer vsx-423 receiver for 190eur. this will put you over budget by 49eur which isnt bad considering the crazy inflated prices you have. the jbl set gets some pretty decent reviews for the price and the pioneer is capable of powering them, has dts-hd and enough features to allow you to upgrade in the future if you wanted. you would still need to buy either a bd player or bd software for the computer though. this is probably the route i would go as its closer to your budget. if you want more details on this set go ahead and ask.

you could get a cheaper speaker set like the jbl 510 but then you will be in the same kind of boat as the denon speakers. decent, but not quite worth recommending despite being cheaper. likewise the boston acoustics set is alright but in the same boat.

edit:
to be honest i've never heard of them using BDXL disks for movies. the most that i've seen is BDDL. in most cases the movies are split into two disks as you have said. while i wouldnt put it past them to use this technology in the future once BDXL is common in almost all players i wouldnt expect it for quite awhile. movie producers arent going to alienate 99% of their customers by putting a movie on bdxl just because it fits better. instead they will put it on two disks since pretty much every player supports bddl. in other words... dont worry too much about bdxl quite yet.

after all... it could be that with 4k video and the massive file sizes that they invent a new format type. who knows how the market is going to go. if you use your pc and your drive though you will be ready for bdxl if they threw it your way. i wouldnt count on it anytime soon but if you wanted to have it as an option and since you already have the player i'd probably use your pc. no sense in buying a bd player if you have one.

I'll stay with what i have for a while, till i can get extend my budget. Then i'll buy those polk speakers and a receiver. Let's hope it's worth it

What receiver would you recommend?

its your choice of course.

i did look a little further into the polks and i saw mention that a few people thought they were rather overpriced for what they offered (probably because of the polk name) it might not be worth the 128eur premium over some of the others listed. it was mentioned that were only just a bit better than some of the other speakers available like the energy 5.1 (not available to you sadly) and some other jbl speakers (the cinema 610 wasnt mentioned) as well as bose (which is a given since almost anything beats out this junk).

the vsx-423 is probably the cheapest i would go for a receiver for those speakers as well since it can handle the 100w@8ohm load. while not a high end receiver it also offers some pretty decent features for the price.

given your pricing arrangements... i still hold by my recommendation that the jbl cinema 610 and the pioneer vx-423 might be the best solution to keep the prices reasonable as well as having decent performance. as far as i can tell the cinema 610 is pretty solid (and should be comparable to the energy 5.1 system i originally wanted). of course before buying anything i'd suggest more in depth research.

also keep in mind that there are some other expenses you will have besides just the receiver and speakers.

definite:
-you will need to buy either blueray playing software like powerdvd13 (if you get it for the same price as us then 65eur) for the pc or a blueray player which could run you 100eur)
-you will need to buy some speaker wire. if you get it for the same price as us this is probably going to cost you about 35eur

optional:
-if you wanted to use bananna clips instead of the binding posts on your receiver those cost a bit
-if you wanted to run under the floor or through the wall and need wall plates those cost extra

Alright, so JBL cinema 610 it is, plus the vsx 423. That should be around 560€. PowerDVD 14 standard edition is 35€, which seems cheap compared to other stuff in Greece, unless it's missing basic functions for which you'd have to pay extra.

ArcSoft Totalmedia Theatre is 65€, so no.

I will need to run the wiring on the wall, whatever plates i need i will figure at some point.

About the cables though, i honestly have no clue. What's this speaker wire? And the bananna clips, wut?

as far as i can tell you should be happy with the jbl & pioneer. i havent used them myself though and i can only go off of what i read and reviews. i do have a pioneer receiver though (higher end model) and love it.

powerdvd14 standard doesnt include BD playback. you can see the versions here
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-ultra/compare-versions_en_US.html?&r=1

speaker wire is pretty much two individual copper wires encapsulated in rubber or other substance (normally clear). you can see an example of it below.

what gage (thickness) you get will be determined by the length of the wires you will need

this wire is what you use to hook the speakers up to the receiver. the one side connects up to the positive on both ends (red ports) and the other side connects up to the negative on both ends (black ports). you can differentiate between the wires by a stripe or writing along the one edge over the wire.

on the wall or in the wall? if you want to run it "on" the wall then may i suggest looking at flat speaker wire (if available)?
