I put a single RCA connector into the digital audio output on the tv, then used an adapter to go to a red/white pair of RCA input plugs into the HTS. No sound through the HTS. Sound level is up around 25, and I do get sound when HTS is in AM tuner mode. TV is brand new. What else can I try?

Your TV only has a Digial Coaxial output. Your surround sound setup only has Analog RCA inputs. As getochkn stated above, they are not compatible.

You are not completely out of luck though. You can find fairly inexpensive devices that will convert the signal. Here is one from Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY%C2%AE-AGPtek-Digital-Optical-Converter/dp/B005DIRI6I

The only downside to such a device is that it will have to be powered to be able to do the conversion. That means one more thing plugged in to your power strip and one more wire to have to deal with.
