1. What is your budget?

Less than $1000

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

I prefer 15 inch, but I am using 14 inch now and I don't have any problem with it. I am thinking about 15 inch because I have to read a lot in coming days.

3. What screen resolution do you want?

Not sure, anything which is good for reading.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

Nope, my laptop will stay on table for most of the time. I have to take it to college only once or twice a month.

5. How much battery life do you need?

5-6 hrs will do.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

No, I prefer games on Nexus 7

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Anything above 200GBs is fine

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

Not sure.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

At least for 2.5 to 3 yrs

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

I don't think I would be needing one, but DVD ROM/Writer will do.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

Not sure, I like Lenovo and Apple. But I am open to other suggestions.

13. What country do you live in?

I am in India now, but I have to buy laptop from US, as I am going to US for MS

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

Somebody suggested me that since the technology is changing rapidly I should go for 8GB RAM as they'll serve me well for at least 3 yrs. Also I use linux as my primary Operating System, so if I can save some money on windows license then it would be great.

I feel the Lenovo Ideapad y510p, would be a good choice for you, some websites work more than others with the price, however. You can get it on amazon for 1100$. If that doesn't work for you you can look to iBuypower with the Battalion 101 W650SF for 989$

Hope that helps somewhat!

Nice suggestions :) I can see the price starts fro $820 here. I have some questions regarding Ideapad series.

How good are Ideapads in performance as compared to Thinkpads? I have used thinkpad before and even though I don't like its small and rough touch pad, thinkpads are good in performance, they don't heat much, if we install Linux they work like a charm.

Also do you have any idea about performance of ASUS and Samsung when compared to Thinkpads?

Okay how is the life of Lenovo E440, will it going to work fine till 3 yrs? I read many bad reviews about E440.
The Inspiron laptop you posted looks pretty sturdy, do you have any idea about its life as well?

I'm not really sure about the Lenovo, I personally wouldn't get a Lenovo in general. If you read bad reviews then I would suggest you steer clear.

The Dell will last years for sure, I have owned several Dell laptops and have not had a single problem with any of them. I normally recommend Dell because I consider them very reliable.

But of course, go ahead and read reviews on the Inspiron and make up your own mind :)
