Hi all

Having a problem with my Acer Aspire one725 not starting. I was downloading windows 8 in the background and I don't know if this tried to install itself and has caused the problem.

On trying to start up now it generally goes to a blank black screen, although sometimes the acer name comes up and it says loading system restore. I thought it had fixed itself today when it loaded to the windows recovery screen and then booted on its 3rd go. I logged in again and used it for about 20 minutes before the screen just went black in the middle of browsing. I got it to boot and go through recovery again tonight, it came up with additional advanced options this time, I tried recovery again but it didn't complete. I can hear the fan is working, the screen loaded the acer name screen at one point which was fuzzy, so I thought it may be the screen but it seems fine now.

I have tried removing the battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds which may have helped it turn on once but that was it.

Any other advice? I have read from similar queries removing ram might fix it or could it be a BIOS issue?

If I can get system restore to boot it again is there anything I should do then?

Thanks
James

I'm not sure whether you used the Windows system restore or the Acer factory recovery, but in either case it sounds like there is a hardware issue. RAM is easy to test, so you are welcome to start there. MemTest86+ can test RAM, or you can remove all but one module and run the system. If the problem comes up again, swap that module out and test with another. If the problem continues despite which memory module is installed, my next best prognosis would be the CPU is the fault.
