I am looking at a few different laptops that I will be using for productivity and some gaming. I tend to hold on to laptops for a few years so I want it to be somewhat futureproof. My question is whether or not the extra resolution is going to be worth the 500 - 600$ that separates the laptops with nearly identical specs. I need to be able to move the computer sometimes, but mostly it's a desktop replacement/mobile workstation.

I know running games at native 2880x1620 is pretty much out of the question with a GeForce 870m for performance reasons. So my question is: do you think the extra resolution makes sense? Or would it be better off spent on a big SSD or external monitor?

2880x1620 on a 15.6" display seems like text may be pretty small. I haven't played with windows 8 much at such high resolutions - will it look crappy?

Don't want to spend much more than $2000+- a few hundred.

No it will look pretty good but like you said you won't really be able to play games at the resolution so it is mostly a feature for graphic design and the like where they need to see the small details. Personally I would spend the money elsewhere.

I figure though that you're not apt to do graphic design work on a 15.6" laptop screen. That's when you'd plug in an external monitor with higher res and better colour accuracy and contrast etc. And for the price difference, you could probably buy a pretty wicked external monitor of a higher quality.

Haha that's exactly what I was thinking. It seems like a marketing thing to me as high resolution seems to be the thing regardless of whether it makes sense or not.
