I installed a Crucial M500 ssd in a Dell latitude D830. The machine does not see the drive. Can't find it in the BIOS. It also does not work in a D620 but did work in a newer HP laptop. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks.

Solution
Found the solution. With the D830 you must use the 9.5mm spacer that comes with the drive. Simply mount the self-adhering spacer to the bottom of the drive, install in the bracket for the old drive, and voila! Worked for me.

Same problem here, but I have discovered the reason. When installed in the existing Dell bracket, it doesn't slide ALL the way in. When I remove the SSD from the bracket and just insert the bare drive, it is recognized. Anyone have any experience modifying the bracket to make this work? I'm going to shave the bracket a little and see if I can make it work. I'll let you know.

I had the exact same problem with a Latitude D830, but it is solved now. The cause was the "POST behaviour" BIOS setting. You must set it ONCE to "thorough" instead of "fast" or "skip". Mount the SSD and start up. The BIOS will take longer, but it will detect the SSD. After installing windows, you can set the BIOS back to "fast" - it knows which SSD is installed and remembers it. I have BIOS version 11, which is not the most recent one. No need to upgrade!
