Hello,

I'm looking to learn some programming. Therefore, I am looking to buy a cheap laptop to work on since I plan on loading it with Linux. What should I look for in a system if I am only planning to use it to learn and implement some programming codes. I don't intend on gaming or doing any other fancy stuff on it. Could I get some suggestions or things to look for in a system?

Thanks.

You really don't need allot of computer for programming. If you didn't want to spend much have you ever heard of the 'Raspberry Pi'? Its a mini ARM based card that runs linux and can be hooked up to either an old CRT TV (using coax) or an HDMI screen. The best part is it only costs £34...

That's the starter kit, to that you'll need a USB keyboard and mouse, and a suitable screen. The supplied SD card come pre loaded with a linux distro and some programming software to get you started.

It's quite a nice little machine to get started with- and as it doesn't have much oomph it's a good way to practice writing efficient code (as getting something running well on the Pi means it will run well on pretty much anything).

I really like the idea of getting the kit and chances are that I will but not right away. What I am trying to avoid by purchasing a cheap laptop is the having to sit at a desk or in front of a TV screen in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. I'd like the option to do some work in bed whenever I am tired.

Any laptop will do the work as long as it meets the requirements to load Linux in it? Awesome, I'll have a look around NE later and check some reviews for a cheap system. Thanks for the help sofar.
