I want to get audio through my TV speakers as well as my Headphones, but I don't know what option to choose. I have a load of HDMI options which are all "off", and a Digital Audio (S/PDIF) that I can set to ON and it shows that it is playing (the level indicator moves to indicate sound) but no audio can be heard? Do i need some kind of cable to be able to get audio full stop?

You probably need to download audio drivers.

Find out the specifications of your computer and look for drivers for things like your motherboard and processor.

If your PC is connected to your TV with VGA you can add an audio cable to send sound to the TV. It would need to connect to the laptop with a mini plug and the TV with either a mini plug or RCA connectors. Stereo audio outs on desktops are usually green.
The TV is not going to have a digital audio input so that won't work.
If you can connect the PC with HDMI that will carry video and audio.
