There is great audio/video on the tv, but when I use the computer, I can't get sound. Any suggestions? Do I have to remove the hdmi cable from the tv? Is there any other way?

Solution
are you using the television as a monitor for your computer?

if yes, chances are that in your audio playback devices window on the computer (right click the speaker icon on the taskbar) the hdmi output is set as the default audio device.

if you want sound to come out of your speakers connected to the pc you will need the speakers to be set as the default audio device.

are you connecting hdmi after OS has started or during a fresh boot

I ask this because I used to have a win7 i5 and didn't matter when I connected hdmi audio worked but now have win8.1 and i7 (doubt the core cpu makes a difference) but after searching for same issue i verified my own findings. It doesn't like moving the audio after win8.1 is already running and if I want it through hdmi to tv, I have to restart my system with hdmi already connected then audio works.

hope this helps

Hello - ssddx, I hope you do not mind my coming in on this thread and asking about similar situation. I have my computer hooked up to Google TV with an HDMI cable. Also I have discontinued my cable provider and using an indoor antenna.

The video and audio work on the TV and I understand the HDMI cable is sending the video and audio to the TV. IS there any way to ALSO GET AUDIO from my computer with external speakers?
as per your suggestion above - i checked my speaker settings in the task bar - I have Wins 7 and when I checked the speaker setup - I have 3 speaker selections:
1. Speakers -Display USB audio adapter -Default device - this is what is checked
2. Speakers - High Definition Audio DEvice - Ready
3. Speakers - High Definition Audo Device - Ready
I was at Best buy this morning and asked one of the floor reps - and he said there was no solution to get sound from computer
I am of course hoping he is wrong and just does not know????

The reason is the main stations I watch that I may soon not be able to online and I wanted to stream them to the TV (but I don't know if I am actually streaming from the computer to the TV . My stations I want to stream are cspan (3 channels) and MSNBC . At this time I can still view them online but NO AUDIO.
When I tried to access MSNBC on my TV it said "locked" but this was while my cable provider was not disconnedted - but my TV was disconnected from the cable box physically.

What I really want to be able to view on my computer with audi - if they will be eventually blocked from streaming - is to view these stations on line on my computer with auctio - if possible..
Thanks for any help -suggestions.

please create your own thread on this issue instead of hijacking this thread.

if you like i can take a look at your issue and then make a few comments or suggestions then (just pm me the link to your own thread).

make sure you list what sources you are going to be pulling the internet signal from (ie what device will be playing the content. to me it sounded like you wanted the googletv device to pull the content but the pc to play the audio content (not sure if this is correct or not??) which technically is possible in a manner of speaking.
