Hi everyone, I was wondering which of these two Lenovo y510p laptops would be better to go with. I would play Minecraft on it a lot as well as TF2, Kerbal Space Program, etc., but mainly Minecraft. I want to be able to run Minecraft at atleast 60FPS when not recording on pretty high settings.
Another factor I'm considering is which one would run at a lower temperature.

Model from Bestbuy:
Bestbuy model of the Lenovo y510p

Or the model from Lenovo's site with:

Processor
4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
-
Operating System
Windows 8.1 64
-
Display
15.6" FHD LED Glossy (1920x1080)
-
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT755M GDDR5 2GB
-
Memory
8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
-
Hard Drive
1TB Hybrid 5400 RPM + 8GB SSHD

Thanks,

The one from Lenovo's site is way better. It has a bigger processor, more RAM, and a small SSD. I don't see any reason to go with the bestbuy model.

I would say the model from Lenovo's site is better. The CPU seems more powerful, and has 2 more GB of RAM.

But would it be able to run Minecraft at atleast 60FPS on medium settings with fancy graphics?

The Best Buy laptop runs games faster because it has two video cards (755m) instead of just one.

But I heard that not all games run on two graphics cards, is this true?

Oh, I'm not sure how I missed that. I would go with the best buy model because of that.

Most 3D games will benefit from a second video card. TF2 will definitely run better. I'm not sure about Minecraft.

In my experience minecraft will get a small bump from an SLI setup. 80fps with one GTX 660, about 110fps with two in sli.

Max. Keep in mind the graphics cards in the laptop above are less powerful than 660's, so I expect something closer to 80-90fps on ultra/max settings.

Does anyone know which one would remain cooler, if not, what would be the best way to prevent overheating?

The one with the i7 will probably be cooler because it only has one graphics card, but there won't be a big difference between the two. The best way to prevent overheating is to make sure the exhaust vent isn't covered by whatever surface you put the laptop on. Keep in mind that performance is directly related to heat, you aren't going to get a gaming laptop that stays cool all the time.

Would the 6GB of RAM make much of a difference than the 8GB from Lenovo's site?

Not really, it won't give you any fps unless you're in a really demanding game (minecraft for example has a theoretical limit of 2gb used even if you increase the allotted amount). The extra 2gb will only help if you have multiple programs running in the background (on my desktop with 16gb of ram; 8 tabs of chrome, spotify, hangouts, and minecraft, only about 6-7gbs are used). You can always upgrade the ram in the future to 8gb or even 16gb if you find out it's not enough for your needs.

I'm considering the Bestbuy model, will having the i5 instead of the i7 processor hurt the performance much?

It shouldn't, i5's and i7's aren't at all different except the i7 has Hyperthreading, which games can't take advantage of. You will get better performance on the i5 laptop.

You can get the i5-4200M version of the Y510p from Amazon for the same price or less than having to deal with Best Buy... which is a freaking nightmare the last 2 times I have tried.

Keep in mind that you really need to get a Good Cooling Pad if you are going to get the Y510p, as they do like to run really hot.

The games you are playing really, really do not require a machine like the Y510p, though. It can play BF4 on high settings, it would be way overkill for you and likely not worth the heat, low battery runtime, and quirks of an SLI rig.

How hot do they get? I currently have a HP G72 and it likes to rise to 80+ degrees Celsius in 10 minutes, then shuts down when getting even warmer.

While gaming you will see temperatures hit 95-100 c. You need the cooling pad. Don't go for a crappy Targus one either, you will want one that I linked at the very least. There are more powerful ones as well like the CM Storm SF-19, but you do pay for the performance.

How much would a cooling pad help, if heat rises and the internal fans of the computer are blowing downwards?

I think I was getting the mobile processors confused with desktop processors, I wasn't aware they were any different when it came to hyperthreading. But that just makes the laptop with the i5 even better, lol.

Yeah, the i5 is a strong processor, but the i7 and its additional cores/threads should not be overlooked.

Given the price, my favorite is the i5 Y510p, depending on application and required budget of course.

What can you use the 8 GB Solid-State Drive that comes with that model? Seems pretty small.

It's not actually a drive. It's a cache. It automatically figures out what files you access the most (like OS startup files) and stores them in the cache SSD to speed up operations.

This is what is considered a Hybrid SSD. It's quite nice actually. You get a lot of storage and fast access to files you use the most.

I think in this case it's actually a separate chip that plugs into the motherboard, but it functions the same way as an HSSD.

I heard they also help the computer boot-up faster, is this the case?

Yes, hence me mentioning that they store OS startup files ;)

Would this cooling pad work well? http://
