How to get 5.1 surround sound

first of all i would like to state iam a complete noob in all of this please explain every minior detail firstly i have a 32 inch 3D tv it has 3 HDMI In's VGA Audio in and An aux port this is connected to my computer which has a pci sound card and gt 610 (if that matters) now my computer via HDMI has an aux port aswell i have a 5.1 entry level surround sound system (xenta xforce 5.1) which has 1 subwoofer and 5 speakers the subwoofer has Aux port Ac3 ports (explain what ac3 is aswell) and audio out ports the speakers are connected to the audio out ports and the aux is connected to my tv i get sound in every speaker but still dont fell like thats surround sound could u help me out

I have no clue why they are calling it AC3. But AC3 is a format/audio encoding method(and not analog like those plugs on the speakers).

You can not get surround sound out of the 2 channels the speakers are getting from the TV(back in the analog day, they had decoders that could get extra channels, but now it is almost all doing to be some kind of up-mix). You can get surround sound from your computer with 3 3.5 mm audio cables(R/L/RR/RL/Center/Sub).

Depending on your source for the TV, some of it may not even be able to get surround.

Now to get surround into analog speakers like that you need to convert the digital signal(HDMI) to 6 channel analog(almost all computers already have multi channel analog, while most TV's and other devices have long since phased it out for digital only solutions). This requires extra hardware. Again, not all the the channels even have surround sound in some areas.

Okay and what additional hardware is required to do this plz explain what is needed to get full digital sound eg a tosslinkbor something from eg a bluray disc on ps3

Most sound is analog by the time it hits the speakers(since audio is analog).

Now if you have optical out you can just use something like this. Please note this is just the first thing Google shows not my personal recommendation.

These kinds of devices have a digital to analog converter(more than one) to allow optical or coaxial digital signals to be converted to 6 channel audio that can be used with an analog amplifier(the AC3 input in your speakers).

You would also need 3.5mm to 2 x RCA cables(3 of them) to connect from that DAC to the speakers.

What part did you not get?

Adapters like that do the digital to analog conversion and then the speakers get the analog signal.

The 3.5 to 2 x RCA cables are like this.

They fit from the adapter to your speakers.

I will try to get you an image, but it will be messy I warn you.

EDIT.

So lets say this is a 5.1 DAC(it is not, but it does have the needed 6 channel analog output

).

You connect the 3 cables for Right/Left(green in my image) Rear Right/Rear Left(Black in my image) and Center/Sub (Red in my image)

Now the other end of those cables are 2 RCA plugs for each 3.5mm(headphone) jack.

Please do not mind my strange reverse looking cables. Cheap cables actually are backwards(so the red and white are WRONG on the 2 lower cables so I reverse them).

So that is about all you need to do, but please look at the reviews for those converters because I have not personally used them.
