This laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231455
seem best for your needs.
As you said Medium presets - the 745M should be able to run at mixed Medium settings (might need to lower AA, else medium-high) with the resolution it has!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231455
Intel Core i5 4200U (1.60GHz)
8GB Memory 750GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M
1366 x 768
Windows 8 64-bit

Oh well this one is on discount: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231448
it has an i7 which you might not be needing but since it cost few more bucks only and therefore it become more worth :D and it do have a little better Graphic card too.

Actually the Mac Book Pro is far from the best. It's the most expensive (and IMO, overrated) sure, but there's even laptops that far exceed the horse power provided by the Mac Book Pro. The only advantage that the Macbook Pro has is the retina display, but when 1440P and 4K become available on laptops, the retina display will look like an antique.

If I had the cash I'd buy one of these without even thinking about it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152567

For your budget what manufacturers are you considering? If you're considering like Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba, etc that would help to suggest models that better suit your price range.

I have both a 17" and 15,6 " Laptop. The 17" is a bit bulky for sure, but is mobile. The 15.6" is fine and I use a mouse with that rather than the Touchpad. Had that with me when I was in the Hospital and it was perfect. Alienware was bought by Dell and things got a bit bad, but they have really turned it around. My friend was surprised at the quality of the build and it wasn't particularly heavy. There have been some negative things said about the MacBook Pro. I will say this, if your are doing Media Works susch as Video Editing and the like, those things are very good for that. ASUS is a good reputable Manufacturer. I use their Motherboards in my builds. These days, I am not real big on HP as their quality slipped ( as did Dell: not to mention Dell's support ). The Lenovo "Y" series is also good.

Yes Asus been manufacturing laptops now for a while. Initially it is a motherboard manufacturer then a GPU and other parts so hence it do prove to be good.
Otherway too you can simply rely it for 4-5 years easily.
