Macbook Air? Unless you can find a MacBook Pro retina for cheap. The price is too high (~1500) new. I would however, ask the apple store about student discounts. Macs have the best reliability and battery life on the market, coupled with power and performance. I use a MacBook Pro retina, and can run games using the HD 4000, but the Iris graphics on the new ones is better.

The battery life for asus has me a little worried though for it barely last 4 hours after most of the reviews i have read on their laptops

I don't know. I find the Windows laptop scene to be a "replace it every 3 years" deal, or "repair it every three months". I use a Windows desktop, and frankly, having built several, I find Windows to be the most glitch prone OS I have EVER used (Windows 8 esp). It has problems every other day, and that is with Windows 7 Ultimate and a brand new HDD. I have re-installed the OS at least 3 times by now. I also like the all metal construction. But, If it is windows, Google best laptops 2014.

SIDE NOTE: I have seen people (classmates) throw their Mac laptops down the stairs, and power them up afterwards. I have never see a display crack completely, and the OS has a simple function to fix permission errors while running.

There is word for mac, I use it. Also, you can easily install windows on a mac, and remove the mac os. I have done it myself several times, works great.
