Here is my problem, thank you for anyone offering any help.

I was given a non working Gateway MD2614u laptop w/Vista Premium, When turned on it would power up, the volume controls and other LEDs would light up (this laptop has a touch sensitive volume slide with play and pause type functions on the side of the keyboard). The fans all run, hard drive spins up, and DVD drive sounds like it is seeking a disk. This is as far as the system gets, just gets stuck at the "grunt grunt" sound of the DVD trying to access a disk, pauses for a second or two and makes the DVD access attempt again. I have tried putting a bootable DVD in with no results. I did get this machine running for about a month at one point just by taking out one of the 2 sticks of memory it had in it. (prior to this it was doing the same thing I described above). So when the same problem returned I tried swapping out the memory with known working memory in every possible combination with no improvement. next I tried swapping out the hard drive and the DVD drive, still nothing. tried it with the battery, without the battery. Tried taking out the Battery, holding the power button in for 60 seconds, plugging power back in still with no luck. I never get anything on the screen, but have plugged in an external monitor and also gotten no display.

Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated.

have you replaced the cmos battery on some system boards if it goes bad some pc wont post. also have you check to see if the cpu is seated. some older laptops it may be slightly unseated and wont let the system board post. on older laptops if the hard drive pulls to much power it can cause a no post too. on thing also to check is the ac brick output see if it within spec. to low the laptop may blink like it working but wont turn on.
