New amp or a DAC instead?

I have a pre 2005 amp connected to my PC through the onboard audio. Would I be better off getting a new amp or a DAC instead of using the cheap onboard chip?

Also could you recommend some EQ software?

Do you know the specific model number?
It can't hurt to trying to connect it to the DAC (I recommend getting the Audioengine D1.)

Try searching for Realtek audio manager in windows via the Start Button.
You can use the one there.

Alternatively, you go Control Panel ("View By: Large Icons") --> Sound --> (Double-click) Speakers --> Enhancements --> Select 'Immediate Mode' --> Scroll down to 'Equalizer'

The Amp is a Xms AV-3030. So I should just think of a DAC as a sort of, external sound card which will bypass my onboard chip and in turn give me better sound?

Yeah, it'll replace your motherboard DAC, so it'll go through your new DAC and then through your AMP whicih amplifies the clear signal.
