So I recently built my first gaming rig and so far it has far exceeded my expectations. Destroys games like BioShock Infinite and Witcher 2 on ultra settings. For me this is highly impressive. Anyways. I was looking at Fan Xpert and it was set to standard setting. This keeps my PC extremely cool but I tested the silent setting and it brings my fan noise level down considerably. However, it makes me nervous putting it on silent setting because I am afraid of overheating. Anyone have any experience with Fan Xpert and its "Silent" profile?

Always keep it as cool as possible when using ultra settings, like Rami said lower RPM = more heat. It may be loud but its better to have it loud then to fry some hardware.

If you run a demanding game on high, ultra or whatever it might be settings with your fans running on lower RPM (less airflow, more hot air in the case, more of a chance to get F'd.) I'd say it highly depends on the game.

On some MoBos Silent Mode turns off the fans completely and on others it lowers the fan RPMs until the CPU gets really hot and then tries to stabilize the temperature by increasing the fan RPMs significantly.

you can create a custom setting in fan xpert somewhere in between silent and standard so make the fans very quiet when your watching videos or browsing internet and then have them spin up when your cpu is in heavy use in gaming
