A soundcard is way better than the built in audio on your motherboard. Always has and always will be in quality and performance.
A headset or speaker system utilizing a good soundcard will always output better quality, lower latency and performance than a virtual soundcard or virtual surround headset.

If you're playing a game with 3d sound or watching a movie with 3 sound you can tell a world of distance in stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 surround speaker and headphone systems IF the movie or game has 3d audio. You can hear sounds approaching you from north, north east, east, south east, south, south west, west, north west (full circle) if the content is designed that way.

Sadly it's hard to find a really good...

Here's the cold hearted truth man.

Surround sound, whether it be 5.1 7.1 or Infinity.1 and the experience you get from it is a total placebo.

Here are some tips:

1: Never buy a soundcard. They do the same thing your Computer does already, except the Computer already does it 5 times better.

2: Never buy audio equipment from a gaming brand. Buy it from a quality, well known audio company like Sennheiser or Shure.

3. You only have 2 ears, you only need 2 speakers, or driver. Never buy a speaker bundle that has anything more than 4 speakers.

Sadly it's hard to find a really good surround sound headset more so in the true surround set as most of them are virtual. Some audio brands produce surround sound headsets but the price difference isn't very competitive and begins to feel like snake oil and being ripped off. I'm sorry but a headset should never cost 50 - 75% of the price of building a computer no matter what brandname it is.

I like my virtual g930 and i've owned three of them but my roccat kave 5.1 being the first true surround headset I've tried is much better, louder and more accurate on positional audio. The microphone not only detachable but has a higher quality input. My roccat kave 5.1 broke recently though and I'm waiting on my rma.
