I am looking for a high-end gaming laptop to be used with gaming, modelling, programming, image editing. I have been looking at the two models in the topic description and having trouble deciding. 128/256 ssd seems a bit on the small size these days but the msi seems to have a lot of cool features.

The 880m seems the way to go for great graphic experience but is it a bit overkill? For RAM I need minimum 8gb. It has to be a 17" display.

What would you guys get and most importantly, why?

Msi looks better if care for that stuff. Asus is better performance wise. You will need 880m for 1080p gaming. For 1920x1080 native resolution pick 880m hands down. 128 gb ssd is plenty in my book as long as you have a storage drive. Minimum ram 4gb for gaming. I do recommend 8gb for editing, browsing, modelling so go for 8.

Keep in mind cooling and durability are crucial factors in buying a laptop, not only specs. I didn't have the best experience with Asus when it comes to cooling/durability but i did have a great experience with HP. Don't know about MSI but i wouldn't buy one considering their boards are known to have problems at the entry segment.

Btw things change all the time and differ from product to product so the Asus/MSI might be better than an HP counterpart at the same price. Its a gamble but i would research cooling for the specific model anyway.

128gb seem a bit short, for instance having titanfall on your computer takes about 40-50 gb(cant remember exactly), operating system + some application like photoshop, unity3d etc will take up another 30-40gb. Not much left :).

How about the heat, will I be able to have them in my lap(when websurfing/non gaming related stuff)? I previously own a MSI GT660-473NE which I found no trouble having in my lap, without cooling pad of cause.

How much difference does the gb of the 880m matter from 4-> ?

You were talking about vram. In that case 3gb is more than enough. I was talking about system ram at first. So system ram at least 8GB and video ram 3GB is enough. Cooling is not about how hot the laptop feels in your lap :) Its about how good can it cool down the components including but not limited to CPU/GPU/VRMs

My response about cooling was well before I saw your second post :). Not many review for the msi one yet but I see good results for the asus regarding to cooling with its 2 fans as oppose to msi 1.

Go for asus then. Just stress test the shit out of it the first few days, all the works, prime95 blend and maximum heat along with furmark/unigine valley. Keep it cooking for a few hours. If it passes then it will probably endure. If it doesn't you can get your money back.
