Hello, a few months ago I tried plugging in my charger and it wasn't charging If I moved it around including the cord it would sometimes flicker it was charging and sometimes it will charge for a long period of time. I though it was the outlets. Turns out it's my charger or battery can anyone help me to figure out if it is the battery or charger

thanks in advance

p.s i have had it since September 2011

Then my guess is that it dropped, landed on where the laptop gets plugged into, and permanently damaged the laptop itself. Would have saved some time mentioning that in the original post. You're looking at either a system board replacement or trying to find someone who can do component level repair to replace the socket itself. Without actually seeing the laptop that's my best solution. It's hard to say if the AC plug is damaged as well without visual inspection.

My suggestion would be to take it to a repair shop and get an estimate on repair costs. It's possible that repair costs may exceed the value of the laptop. Saying it's a Toshiba Satellite is fine, but without specific model numbers I can't tell you its value.

Most laptops can function without the battery installed. Remove the battery and then try it with just the charger. If it charges fine it's the battery. If it still doesn't work correctly then it's the charger.

Well, remove the battery and see if the laptop functions properly. Like, you said the lights flicker. See if it doesn't flicker after removing the battery. Obviously you can't "charge" the laptop if the battery isn't there to be charged. What we're trying to do is isolate the problem. Verify the laptop stays on with just the charger plugged in.

i turned my computer off, left the charger in and took the battery out. It flickered a white light to show it was on the charge but I always either have to sit it a certain way, or hold it in for it to even charge.

Ok, with the battery out and the AC plugged in we're not charging anything. We're simply providing power to the laptop itself. Now, what we're doing by removing the battery is effectively removing the internal UPS, or battery backup, like you would have for a desktop. If there is a connection issue with the AC adapter then any lapses in power will be indicated by the laptop simply shutting down because there is no internal power to cover for these lapses.

You said you have to prop it just so for the plug to work. Has this always been the case? Or did you drop it or what? What changed to make it so you have to rig it like you do?
