Current status of computer is in bold

A couple weeks ago a friend spilled a beer on my laptop, and unfortunately none of us were in the right state of mind to take the right steps to keep the damage minimal. We just wiped up all the liquid as best we could and turned it upside down and took out the power, which was pretty decent for having the blood alcohol content that we did. I waited 3 days to turn it on.

One of the power saving lights by the keyboard didn't work and the screen doesn't work at all. If I plug in a VGA or HDMI cable it displays perfectly on an external screen. I thought it might be the backlight or the board on the screen that the cable coming from the mobo plugs into, so I replaced the screen but the screen still doesn't work. Now I'm thinking there might be a short in the cable or something in the connection from the mobo to the screen. Also note that the performance of the computer is much slower post spill, I the windows benchmark but it hasn't changed from the pre-spill score. Any ideas on what the issue may be? How to fix it? or if there's a way to convert from HDMI or VGA to the 40 pin LED connector on the screen?
I have an Asus U56E BBL6

thanks
