I bought a XD memory adapter to get my pictures off my Olympus camera unto my computer. Whenever I plug the memory card to the adapter to my computer it asks to format it. I know it will delete the pictures if I say yes. Is there a way to get around this so I don't lose my pictures and so I can upload my pictures to my computer?

Try a different computer, try connecting the camera directly with a USB cable, try using a Linux boot CD to check if it will read the file system better than the Windows setup.
