I opened up my laptop, removed and replaced the thermal paste on the gpu and cpu, and put it back together. when i turned it on it stayed on and ran like normal for about 5 minutes, and then turned off. The display lights turned on when I tried to start it again however, the computer did nothing (no fans no nothing) but i turned it on again after a few minutes, and turned off again in the same manner as the first time i turned it on. Is it possible i applied the paste wrongly? It was my first time

Sounds like some windows files on your hard drive were damaged for whatever reason, and booting in safemode were it probably crashed and started the repair it's self on reboot did the trick, Personally would still make a back-up now you can. But it's possible you will never see it again.

Could you try one more time, and check for the temperature? CoreTemp would be a good one for at least the CPU.
What model are we talking about? Do none of the fans run?

It's an ASUS G73JH. I reopened it to make sure I plugged everything in and the fans were in place and everything, also repasted because I felt I didn't do it well enough the first time. Now the computer turns on and as far as I can tell, stays on, until I get a blue screen error and the computer reboots. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the graphics card? I don't currently have a temprature monitoring program on that laptop and I don't think it'll stay on long enough for me to download one. Not sure how to use the bios to see the temprature I can't seem to get to it. Ran the computer in safe mode though and it's been working without the blue screen so far. Also maybe worth adding is that it worked fine before I did the repasting, except overheating and shutting down if running games/sometimes otherwise.

EDIT: It was on in safe mode for about 15-20 minutes and i kinda left it unattended for a few minutes and when i came back it had restarted, asking if I wanted to start in safe mode etc. Not sure if it closed because of a blue screen error but it did.

EDIT2: ok so ran it for about an hour and a half, even ran through some programs and games to see if they made it turn off or blue screen but it ran, not sure I trust it to have fixed itself but any input on what the problem might be/have been?

I have a HP laptop. When I turn it on and run it for approx. 10 minutes it shuts down. I took it to a tech and he cleaned the insides and the fan and while I was there it ran for about 15 minutes. After I got it home I turned it on and it shut down after about 10 minutes. It keeps shutting down no matter what I do. Help Please. The processor is an AMD A6
