What are the 3 best distributions of Linux for an old VAIO netbook. It needs to be lightweight and good for an intermediate user.

1GB ram
80GB HDD
Intel centrino processor

Im not too into having to to use the command prompt- like features but i dont mind it once in a while.

Ubuntu is too laggy

Joli-cloud is too simple. Doesnt have too many features but otherwise lightweight decent. Its just not for me

Next im going to try Xubuntu and Linux Mint.

What do you suggest

You can also try XFCE version of Linux Mint. its very friendly to people coming from windows. and the XFCE is lighter than cinnamon though may still be a little heavy for that.

Worst case you can do puppy linux runs in less than 512Mb of ram though it looks pretty plain. Otherwise if you know how or are willing to work a little and learn you can build a custom Archlinux specifically for your computer
