I have turtle beach x42 and Im using hdmi from my gtx 770 to my monitor and then the optical out comes from my monitor to my headset but its not working for 5.1.If hdmi outputs to 5.1 whats the problem ? If my tv doesnt output 5.1 whats the optical for ? Isnt that surround ? How can I get surround without buying a soundcard or reciever ? Isnt that the point of 5.1 through hdmi ? Should I be able to do that since hdmi supports 5.1 ? At this point I dont even see what the audio flash is for on the new led visualizer that nvidia added if I cant get the thing connected.I even tried Virtual cable and it says the device(realtek hd audio)doesnt support that setting(5.1) I configured the speakers in th realtek sound manager to 5.1 before I ran it through the vac.Sorry if I messsed up explaining this but its annoying and confusing the crap out of me.

Solution
Since the x42s only have 2 speakers like most headphones or headsets, you can only get simulated surround so in a sense they do output 5.1/7.1 but with a virtual sound. Also, these x42s headsets are made to be used with a console, not a PC.

An option might be to get an inexpensive used receiver that has the necessary hookups so the switching is easier. You hook the GPU HDMI to the receiver but you will unfortunately will have to plug the headsets via optical into the receiver. Then configure windows/MSI for the receiver and configure the receiver for the options you need. Lesson learned don't ever use/buy optical again! hehe

Or maybe a cheaper option is to get a switch box to have easier access since your TV inputs are hard to...
First, you need to make sure the audio source(material) is 5.1.

Second, optical isn't true 5.1. It can only send uncompressed 2.1 and compressed 5.1. Optical isn't true discreet 5.1. SPDIF(optical) can only do simulated 5.1/7.1.

Thirdly, I'm assuming the TV/monitor doesn't have the right outputs, probably RCA stereo and optical.

If your TV/Monitor has a DVI input, I would use the DVI to TV/monitor and then plug your headset into the optical on the motherboard and configure as needed in realtek and windows audio/video settings.

Buying a sound card won't help since most only have analog(which is true discreet surround) or optical which then the soundcard is just a pass through card doing nothing if you hook it up to a receiver/surround sound processor preamp.

I hope that helps, post back if you need more information.

Thanks for the reply.I dont see an optical on my mb.So when I bought these x42's They say 7.1 on them and it seems to work fine on my xbox one.(Or at least 5.1 does) This gpu has a hd audio driver so I dont know why its not allowing me to change from stereo. My tv is a vizio m470vse-1 and as far as I can tell its outputs 5.1.How do the turtle beaches achieve the advertised 5.1 ? I assume the headphone cable I use to use for my pc wont do it and the only way for me to plug them into my xbox is through the optical thing.THe led visualizer that nvidia added to my gpu software had an option to make the led flash according the audio i.e. a song or something I assume.Thats another thing that is making think that this is suppose to work. This is driving me crazy!!!!!I found countless sites where other people have this problem but mist of them bought a reciever that the hdmi goe to before it hits the tv.I would prefer to not by one if possible especially since hdmi should support 5.1.If it didnt why is there software and drivers for it with my gpu ?

It isn't just Turtle Beach but any headsets like Astros and etc, if they are using an optical hookup it can only do simulated 5.1./7.1.

Analog, display port and HDMI are the only way to get true discreet 5.1/7.1 and etc. Your TV only outputs digital(optical) and RCA stereo so hooking up the headset to the TV won't work except for gaming since all games are simulated surround. SO what is happening, you're using HDMI to TV which is true surround but using the optical to hook up the headset, It kinda down converts the channels to optical. So you're arent getting the sound you want, it would require a receiver or a surround sound preamp.

Getting audio software for the GPU won't help. The weak point here is using optical. I don't why and this has been a bitch of mine for years but why don't headsets use HDMI and it is very hard to find a sound card that uses HDMI! Optical is so outdated and really only good for 2.1 sound sources anymore.

I have the Turtle Beach HPA 2s which use analog outputs( which offers true surround) and is excellent for gaming, movies and pretty good for music. Too bad that they are no longer made.

I know you don't want a receiver but for $100.00 for a used one isn't a bad deal. But that still won't solve the problem that most headsets use optical instead of HDMI, display port or analog.

So if it only simulated for games I guess that would work since the only reason I want it is for gaming. This is so F^&%$#@ annoying. The more I learn the more confused I get.So your basically telling that my x42's do not output 5.1 or the 7.1 as advertised ? Here is what I have just to clarify http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/xbox-headsets/ear-force-x42/59.
The hd audio(Realtek)shows 5.1 when I configure it but when I test it doesnt work.I dont understand why its an option if my mb doesnt have the hardware to output 5.1.Can I use analog coming from the hd audio from my mb by plugging into my x42 receiver ? Heres more screenshots.(If they work)

Should I even bother hooking the optical into my monitor ? Is it better quality than analog ?Its kinda of a pain because I have the tv mounted and every time I play my xbox one I have to unplug it if I want my headset to work for BF4 and its hard to get to.

You have been very helpful. So if Im not supposed to buy optical what should I buy ? gaming headsets that support HDMI ?I havent seen one yet but I havent been specifically looking for one either. When I bought this headset it was top of the line as far as I knew.Im sorry if I misunderstood but where does the 5.1 in sound manager come into play ?(See screenshot) Im wondering because its the realtek HD audio thing appears to be for the analog. That would be my last question for you.
Thanks for your help!!!!!!

Sorry, I didn't get back to you sooner! Headsets and sound cards need to have HDMI and why don't they!? I've been saying this for years that optical is fine for music(2.1) but the tech can't handle the surround(5.1 plus) formats and needs to be dropped.

Auzentech put out a sound card with HDMI a few years ago but I think they are out of business.

Another thing that really pisses me off is the mobo's on board chip has the hardware to support all of the various surround sound formats(I didn't see if you posted your mobo model) but if you read the various manufactures spec sheets the surround encoders are optional software.

I understand why the software is optional on the mobo because the various licensing fees would add to the cost of the motherboard. But it is really hard to even buy the software to add it yourself. For example it might cost $10-20 each to add Dolby, DTS and Creative software to enable all the options for surround.

Don't even get me started why "Direct Sound" was completely borked by Microsoft starting with Windows Vista. Companies like "Creative" with EAX had/has wonderful surround sound emulation but with MS changing all that it was eliminated. Creative IMHO still has the best surround sound for gaming, they have been doing it for years and their drivers are better than most, not perfect but at least don't screw as bad as Asus sound cards.

Sorry for the rant. But MS and sound card makers really need to step up their game for gamers!
