Hey guys,

I'm planning on purchasing a new laptop soon, and I could really use some advice. I have a few dilemmas when it comes to some of the options. Mostly, I'll be using this setup for schoolwork and light to moderate gaming.

OS: Windows 8.1 64
RAM: 8GB DDR3 2Dimm
HDD: 750GB @5400
Wireless: 802.11b/g/n 2x2 WLAN and Bluetooth

CPU Options:
1. 4th generation Intel® Core™ i5-4200M Processor
3. 4th generation Intel® Core™ i5-4330M Processor
2. 4th generation Intel® Core™ i7-4702MQ Processor

GPU options:
1. NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M Graphics with 2048MB of dedicated video memory
2. NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M Graphics with 4096MB of dedicated video memory

Display options:
1. 15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1366x768)
2. 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1920x1080)

So far, I have been told that the base i5 (4200) is more than adequate for my purposes. If this is true, I guess it would be unnecessary for me to upgrade the CPU.

Now, I'm planning on upgrading the GPU but I'm somewhat confused about the options. The website does not specify whether the two NVIDIA graphics cards are DDR3 or GDDR5. I'm thinking that the 750M is probably DDR3 since it has 4GB or VRAM (4GB seems like overkill doesn't it?). I'm not sure about the 740M. Does anybody know whether these two cards are DDR3 or GDDR5? Which of these GPUs would be a better choice?

As for the display, I want to upgrade to the Full HD option. However, I heard that a higher resolution display puts more strain on the graphics card and might not work well with these two mobile Nvidia GPUs (750M and 740M). Is this true?

I would really appreciate it if you guys could clear up some of these questions for me. Thank you all very much for your help.

P.S. This is my first post, and I apologize for any mistakes.

CPU- the i5-4200M performs very well and an upgrade is a waste of $

Graphics- The GT 740M and 750M both use GDDR3 VRAM. The 750M would be a waste of $70.
Also, if you weren’t aware, the i5-4200M comes with Intel HD 4600 graphics which performs on the same level as the NVIDIA GT 620M/630M. If you choose the 740M, the system will use Optimus technology to switch between the Intel and NVIDIA graphics processors depending on how much performance you need.

Display- Full HD is a no brainer.

Memory- Upgrading to 8GB for $40 wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Hard Drive- The Hybrid version of the 750GB drive is well worth the extra $60 and will improve system performance noticeably.

Hard Drive Acceleration Cache- $39 for a 24GB SSD is money well spent.

Keyboard- the $30 Backlit Keyboard looks very cool.

Networking- the 802.11 AC WLAN card for $30 is definitely the way to go!

Thank you for your response, allfiredup. You have answered most of my questions very clearly.

Here are my thoughts. As far as overall performance of the laptop, the GPU will most likely still be the limiting factor (the weakest link if you will) when running a modern game like BF4, even with just the i5 4200 CPU. That's why I'm contemplating spending the extra money to solidify the overall capability of the system. It would be really great if you could elaborate more on why the 750M is a waste of $70 compared to the 740M.

GPUBoss has 750M rated at 6.5 overall while 740M is at 6.1

Also, notebookcheck.com has the 750M running modern games at substantially higher fps, especially on the higher graphics settings

Also, I'm not sure whether what you said about both GPUs being GDDR3 is correct. I checked the specs from the manufacturer's website, and it says that both of these chips are either DDR3 or GDDR5. Maybe I'm confused, and if so I apologize. Otherwise, here are the links to the specs

Again, thank you for your help
