Is there a way to keep the laptop screen on when lid is closed?

I have it so the closing the lid does nothing however it automatically pushes my desktop on my secondary monitor. I do NOT want that.

Yes there is.
Go to the control panel change "view by: icons"
then go to "power options" then on the left choose "what the power button does"(or something similar)
There you should find the option to choose what closing the lid does.

Like I said though,

Oh, yeah sorry.
I'm not exactly sure what you want it to do?

So do you want the other monitor to go black? if so, I think there is an option for fade to black when lid is closed in the power button options.

This is not a problem I'm familiar with, so I'm not sure, but it might. When you use extended desktop and put all your shortcuts on your laptop's screen, the desktop on the other monitor will be empty. Then if you close the lid, the empty desktop will (maybe) stay on the other monitor.

So far I've only came up on this solution:

1. open device manager
2. in "System devices" find "ACPI lid"
3. Open "ACPI lid" properties, and go to "Driver" tab.
4. Select "Update driver"
5. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software" and "Let me pick.."
uncheck "Show compatible hardware"
6. And now...in "Manufacturer" select "(Standard system devices)" and model:
"Volume manager" (yes, "Volume manager")

Is there another way I can do this without having to change drivers?

I doubt drivers will help in this case.
I really don't see why you don't want the desktop to shift to the other monitor... Can't you just change the closing of the lid to make it go dark?
If you're not using your computer but want it to be ready for use, you can just put it to sleep mode. Or just shut the monitor off if you don't want the desktop to show when the lid is closed...

Nothing you've stated will resolve my problem.

I never said anything about wanting my screen to go dark or turning it off etc. Please refer to my first sentence...

Again, is there any way to accomplish this without changing my drivers?

I read about that as well, but hoping I can accomplish this without messing with the hardware.

Honestly dont know why they changed the behavior between XP and vista/7. In XP, 'Do Nothing' did exactly that: do, nothing.

In Windows 7 when you close the lid, everything is transferred to the external monitor, I changed the configuration for the desktop being on the laptop screen with the lid closed, but if I open the lid and close it after, the desktop is transferred to the external monitor again. What is the make and model of laptop do you have.

I have a Sony VAIO SVF14A15CXB.

Basically, I have Adobe Lightroom running in multi monitor configuration. Primary monitor has the photo library and processing options and secondary showing the working image in fullscreen for the client to view.

I have everything auto processing so everything is shown on the secondary monitor real time (so I dont need to do anything on the primary screen).

I want to close the lid so I can tuck the laptop away to keep my area clean.

Once I close the lid though, everything gets shoved to the secondary monitor and basically lose my fullscreen viewing for the client.

i have the exact same problem. BUT i used not to have it! i came out of the blue! i could use the extension with changing to primary fine and suddenly i can't. i can elaborate on this in case you can give any advice.

i have a second monitor as an extension to the right. So far, i could drag a movie in the second monitor, close the lid (which the laptop screen is my primary as i want it to be) and the second monitor could still be an extension. Suddenly, that changed, now whenever i close the lid my second monitor becomes primary (which is annoying). when i open the lid, it goes back to being an extension to the right but the identification numbers are upside down, meaning that the laptop screen became primary again but No. 2 and the second monitor became extension (as it was) but No. 1. I can't find what's wrong with that. The only thing i can think of is that i tried to force a game to open in fullscreen to the second monitor while having plugged ps3 controller (with MotionInJoy) and i got a BSOD. I think that after that it happened. I didn't take seriously the BSOD because i had it a couple of times with another game and with no second monitor. I uninstalled the game. I re-installed it today and to my surprise i saw that when i launched it, it started in fullscreen mode in my second monitor. somehow is like it remembered it even though i completely uninstalled it. i tried forcing it the same way to play im the laptop screen but nothing came from that. When i say force i mean that i changed it to windowed mode, dragged it to the other monitor, and then changed it back to fullscreen mode. When i first installed the game it worked (and probably messed my monitors), now that i tried to do the same but backwards hoping it will undo whatever happened, it just crashed. tried to open it again but it started in the second monitor as before. Sorry for the long post! Any ideas? I searched all over but nothing seems to help or being at least relevant to my case. Thank you in advance and sorry for the long post again!

i have hp laptop with win vista.
