Hello,

My dad bought a new laptop because his old 1 has some strange problems.
Now I've received the old one and tried to fix it without success.

The problems:
When the pc boots, it's always on the 'bad monitor', meaning I have to change the source with fn+f5 everytime it boots. Else I cannot see the bios boot screen. So this has nothing to do with the windows that is installed on the pc. I'm thinking of installing a linux also, maybe the second problem is resolved also by it.

So the second problem is that when the pc is on, and for example I have µTorrent and Windows explorer open and then I open Chrome, the pc just restarts without a bsod or anything else. Also when nothing is open and I plugin my harddrive and open it in Windows Explorer, this restart happens after some seconds. I have no idea what is really causing these resets.
But when I leave the laptop on for hours with just µTorrent, it never resets. The harddrive works on my desktop pc perfectly, so it aint the harddrive either.

Things I've already tried:
- Install Windows 8.1 Ultimate instead of the default Windows 7 Home that was installed before. The problems were already there with the W7.
- Realtemp shows 50° when the pc resets, so it aint the temperature either.
- Opened the laptop up and cleaned the ventilator and heatsink

Haven't found anything to try for the first problem yet.

The current specs:
Operating System
Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit
CPU
Intel Pentium SU4100 @ 1.30GHz 32 °C

465GB Seagate ST9500325AS (SATA) 26 °C
Optical Drives
No optical disk drives detected

Thanks in advance for anything I could test/try or any solution for the problems.

Cheers,
Devil

Try different RAM first, it may also be something with the motherboard or CPU. Running memtest86 is a good idea for a few hours, you should also Prime95 for a while to make sure the system is stable under load, possibly a benchmark like 3DMark or Passmark where different parts of the system are used more or less fully.

Check event log for any errors, you may see something crashing there which may point to what is not working properly.
