what's the average GB ram size needed for a good working laptop?

Im trying to buy a laptop to play mostly games and messaging on but i dont know how many gb to get

ram memory u can upgrade later on 2-8GB OR USE flash drive connected via usb before u by more memory.every laptop have different capacitor for memory.

It really depends on the applications you plan to use. For basic use on a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer, 4 - 6 GB is adequate. If you intend on doing more serious gaming or applications that require quite a bit of memory, then 8 - 16 GB tends to be sort of a "sweet spot" for more enthusiast types. It's only when you get into professional software that more than 16 GB becomes a desideratum.

As a laptop user and custom build user myself I would say to either get a laptop with at least 8GB Ram but really? A laptop for games?

Um, yes. Have you ever herd of things like World of Warcraft, Minecraft, ArcheAge, and many others. These things are LIFE to many people.
