The laptop will be used for web browsing and the Oxford English Dictionary. It is normally plugged in so battery life is not an issue. It is to replace a Dell Vostro 1400 purchased March 2008 whose screen has gone red. It maybe possible to repair the older laptop and although it has the slowest CPU option performance is not an issue. The existing machine has a dvorak keyboard and it would be nice to have a new one with a dvorak layout and keys labelled.

The current screen resolution is 1280 by 800 on a 14 inch screen. An ASUS notebook with an 11.6 screen was tried but found that the writing was too small to read unaided and the OED wouldn't install. OED has been installed under Win 7 and I suspect it will work under win 8 with a physical drive on the laptop. Also Basic Win 8 and the word app produced a negative response in the end user.

The preference would be to have something with the same external dimensions simply from where it is placed but up to 2 inches greater in both dimensions would be acceptable. OED requires an X86 processor and Windows though I understand it has been installed under some flavours of LINUX. An LED screen with a decent viewing angle would be an advantage as it the system is used to view photographs.

The location is Canada budget probably up to $800 but I'm happy to pay $450, reliability is important.

This is a link to a list of laptops, select the top one which is a HP ENVY. It takes you to the configurer where you can customise the HP ENVY 15 inch laptop. Customisations to get are:

CPU from A8-5550m to an A10-5750m
Display from 1366x768 to 1920x1080
Operating System from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Pro
(This upgrade is because Windows 8 Pro has 'downgrade rights' to install Windows 7 Professional)
