dell laptop cursor won't move

I've seen the acer thread, re cursor issues. I have a dell inspiron with XP & the cursor won't move via the integral pad. It will operate with the USB mouse. I would prefer to have the laptop pad working however. Any clues....?

Hi, do you have a function key to enable/disable the touchpad?

Thank you for the response. I am unable to locate anything that may indicate touchpad switching. The cursor actually began to slow, becoming more erratic, then after a few minutes stopped entirely.
