My father's laptop has developed an issue lately and I have been unable to fix it. I believe the solution is a clean install but Dad is too stubborn to do that, so I thought I'd bounce it off my fellow forum mates and see if you all have any ideas.
Dad is running a laptop, about 5, perhaps 6 years old. It has a Core i3 processor (I don't have the model number handy). I bring him movies and tv shows occasionally in multiple formats... .avi, .mp4, .mkv depending on the show. Recently, the .avi files started to skip and stall during playback, but only the .avi files. mp4 and mkv are doing just fine. I've had K-Lite Codec pack installed on his computer all this time, but it's only in the last couple months that the problem popped up. I went over the other day, deleted the codec pack, and installed the most up to date pack, just in case that was the issue. It wasn't. Then I tried installing DIVX's codec to see if that might work better.... no dice. Still the same problem. Now, knowing my father as I do, I know that he installs programs that he might use once and never touch again, and he never does a wipe and install. I have a feeling that his registry is a mess after all these years, and this .avi glitch is just the beginning of a downhill trend. I've told him that the best course is to back up his files (documents, movies, whatnot) and do a fresh install, but he's just a stubborn SOB who doesn't want to bother with that... but he still expects me to fix it without a fresh OS install. Does anyone have any ideas as to what else it might be? Thanks in advance.
