1. What is your budget?
- Definitely under $1K, the further under the better
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
- screen size isn't much of an issue, not a netbook though. Probably 15" though could go either way. Would like something light weight if possible.

3. What screen resolution do you want?
- not as much of a concern.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
- we are also purchasing a desktop as the media centre so no.

5. How much battery life do you need?
- as much as possible ideally

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
- The desktop will be the primary game machine but we still would like to play games like: The Sims, Sid Meier's Pirates! and some MMORPGs

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
- Photo organization and editing would be good. Only minor video editing. the desktop will probably handle most of those tasks.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
- decent storage, 500gb would work

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
- open to anything, might like to buy in store rather than order but not set on anything

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
- as long as possible, at this point we've been running them into the ground annually so it's time to do it right.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
- at least DVD RW, preferrably bluray player at least.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
- brand isn't the issue as I trust I won't get any poor recommendations from this site.

13. What country do you live in?
- Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
- Ask and I'll answer, not sure what else to say.

Here's a good budget laptop, dedicated graphics and top of the line AMD mobile CPU:

For around $400, maybe a bit less, you can find the Samsung 840 Evo 500GB. It's a good SSD to buy, and you can add it to the laptop for a ton of additional speed. Then, you could buy a USB to SATA while still staying under budget, so the original hard dive could be external storage.
