So I am looking to get a new laptop and need some advice. I currently have a Lenovo T500 series laptop that I got about 4-5 years ago. I really like it and would like to get something like it again. The main purpose for the laptop will be programming for work and fun along with entertainment and light gaming (Still use my desktop for heavy gaming). I would like a discrete nvidia gpu, though it doesn't have to be the best.

Any advice on laptops that fit the above?

yep Lenovo y510p. Replace the HDD with a samsung SSD and install windows 7 x64 and you can pretty much run all games on ultra with super fast loading times. If you're a student you can input code to save couple hundred dollars. This was 8 months ago for me. For windows Experience Index I get 7.6 in SLI (geforce 750m) and my 3770K + Gtx 670 SLI desktop gets 7.9. Good luck!!

So I am am looking less for a high end gaming laptop and more a laptop that is reliable, good for things like programming, watching movies, and some light gaming.

I bought a Lenovo y410p in August, 2013. I got the high resolution screen option for a total of $830. The 14" screen is nice in some cases, but bad in others. I like how compact and sturdy it is and how the keyboard is spread out. I dislike how hard it is to read text. 1600x900 on a 14" screen makes text very difficult to read for long periods. I constantly have the screen zoomed in. I can run modern games at 60fps on medium setting effortlessly (can't tell a bit of difference between ultra/high/medium, so I keep it at medium). Battery life currently (6 months old) about 2-3 hours. The keys feel so smooth. Speakers are so LOUD and clear. Red backlight is awesome. I am having a hard time finding any ultrabay items though, so when you initially buy it, buy exactly what you want.
If I could do it over, I probably wouldn't have changed anything. It's hard to beat the price. Good luck buddy :)
