battery shuts off with no warning

When my battery capacity gets around 40% it just cuts like if i had taken the battery out. It's extremely annoying when having to deal with larger assignments or something down that alley. do anyone have a suggestion on what to do?

Check your power plan:
go to - control Panel - power options - change when the computer sleeps - change advanced power settings
look at the battery section,
Adjust your reserve, low, and critical battery levels and what action to take for each.
