Hi, my family computer fell from a height of about 15 inches 7 months ago and the screen went totally black. However, I plugged it into a spare monitor I had laying around and it's been working fine up until last week. The laptop turns on, but there is no signal on the monitor. I'm suspecting one of the connectors may have come loose. I'm may be good with working on desktops, but I'm not too confident with laptops. I know how to take it apart, not that great at putting it back since I messed up with the screws as determined by my previous endeavor in working on the laptop. My question is would it be wise of me to try to fix the laptop myself or take it to a shop and getting it fixed by someone who knows what he/she is doing?

Btw, it's a HP Pavilion dv6, not too sure on the exact model but off of memory it has some dual core AMD Processor, 4GB RAM, and a 500GB HDD. I can go get the exact model number if needed.

It's best to bring it for repairs. Keep in mind that somethings on the motherboard likely broke and it will probably be somewhat expensive to replace the motherboard and the LCD screen is likely damaged as well so that can be expensive to replace as well. Generally speaking the cost of a new LCD panel is about $75, but you will also have to pay for labor too.

Not sure how expensive the motherboard will be. It may range from $75 to $150. For example, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Y470 which is no longer under warranty. The nVidia GT 550m graphics chip has malfunctioned. Since it is soldered into the motherboard, the only thing I can do is replace the entire motherboard. Checking out ebay, it costs $180 for a new mobo from China (includes...

If you are not familiarized with it, i'd advise not to touch anything because you can potentially do more damage than fixing. Get someone who is more familiarized with it to fix it.

Also find out if your warranty is still available and get a replacement if possible.

I'd take it to someone or ask someone who's more knowledgeable on laptops and tell them the situation or wait for someone here, unfortunately I'm no good with laptop repair.

I suppose I can call Lenovo / go to a repair store to find out how much they would charge for repairs, but I mostly stopped playing games on my Y470 before the GT 550m died, and I was starting to look for a new laptop anyway...
