Intel Core i7-840QM

this is the best cpu it can use. you should take it to a professional to change, laptop's are harder to chance cpu-s compared to normal desktops.

Thanks for your kind reply. Are you sure that the whole upgrade process is possible? Isn't it soldered to the motherboard?

yep. it's a socket like any other cpu socket. it's better a profi to do it because the laptops are harder to disassemble/reassemble, plus they are more susceptible to overheating in case the thermal paste is applied bad.

Thank you for your confirmation. The Core i7-840QM is a little bit expensive compared to the whole system price, I think I will go on Core i7-740QM, Is there a remarkable performance difference between 840QM and 740QM? Will the upgrade to i7-740QM from Core i3-350M be performance-remarkable?

Update: I also found that neither 840QM or 740QM have integrated graphics (Intel HD Graphics). So what will happen with the switchable graphics?

edit: nvm, missread a teck page from intel, all socket 988 and should work

integrated graphics should switch to the amd card at all times i think

the 840 just has 2more mb of cache and a higher frequency

What do you mean "all socket 988 and should work"?
If I upgrade to one of the i7 processors listed I will lose the switchable graphics functionality. In order to keep that functionality I should upgrade to i5-580M, Will upgrading to i5-580M make any performance difference?
To be honest, I have a SanDisk 512GB SSD and I think the PC can do better with a better CPU.

i think the i3 to i5 is just not worth it. all you get is a turbo clock (where the cpu gets to 3,3 ghz if there is tdp headroom) and a slightly higher base speed.

the i7 on the other hand actually has 4 cores / 8 threads. (double)

losing the switchable isn't a bad thing, the ATI HD 5470 would be used at all times. so you just lose a bit of battery time.

You are right. The i7 upgrade worth it while the i5 doesn't. BTW, Is the upgrade to second or third generation of i7 possible in my case?
A guy from HP forums told me that my motherboard only supports dual core CPUs, Is that correct?

-i found that cpu listed on the spec document you posted, but if you asked support and they said it's not compatible it's possible that the i7 is not in fact supported by the motherboard.

This was the answer of the guy from HP forums
"You can use all the Core i3 and Core i5 processors all of them are the first Intel generation. The guide lists Core i7 processors but your graphics card matches only two dual core compatible boards. You have to get one of the quad core compatible board to upgrade to one of the Core i7 processors."
Please note that he is not an employee of HP and therefore his answer is not official and he was only trying to help.
I think he recommends upgrading to i5 because these chips have integrated graphics, so the switchable graphics will still work after the upgrade.
I searched the web and found no direct answer stating that HD 5470 isn't compilable with quad core i7 processors.

he could still be right. in addition to the graphics card being different the max tdp of the i7-s is slightly higher so it's possible that laptops that were intended for i7-s have a different cooling mech/power circuitry - as in a completely different motherboard.

edit: there's really no way to tell before hand so it may not be worth the risk...

I think that the best option I have now is the core i5
I found a Core i5-560M CPU for 39.99$ (Refurbished). It's a high end first generation i5 processor. I think I'll be upgrading soon.

After careful consideration spec review I decided to upgrade to i5-580M.
i got i5-580M from eBay and 'Arctic Silver 5' thermal compound.
The difference is noticeable but not without cost.
The i5 has a feature called 'Max Turbo Frequency' which boosts the CPU from 2.66GHz to 3.33GHz when needed.
This is nice but causes massive heat production from the CPU.
The highest temp peaks were ~75C.
Take it under consideration when upgrading.

After 2 weeks with i5, I gave away my i3 and very happy with the upgrade.
