I have a dell inspiron m5040 I bought from someone thats only 3 years old, it was working good then it randomly started turning off. I took it appart, cleaned it out and applied new thermal paste and its still doing it. The cpu fan seems to be running randomly also, I installed cpu temp and its running between 45 and 58 deg c. When thing I noticed is when I have it partially disassembled and running it doesnt seem to do it, but when its fully assembled it shuts off. It has a fresh install of windows 7 and a new hdd. Im going on a tdy next week and would like to get it figured out so I can take it with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That still could possibly be heat, depending on what other things have been altered or changed on it. It's possible that another component you're installing is causing the shutdown, which would explain why it runs partially disassembled, but I think another likely thing is that the CPU fans aren't cooling it adequately. This would ALSO explain possibly why it works when your computer is disassembled- if you're running it with the components more exposed to fresh air it might be buying it more time because the heat can escape. Could you get it well-exposed to a large fan of some kind and run it? If you're getting a lot of airflow on the CPU and components and it lasts a little longer than it did before, it could well be heat. have...

The only thing I have changed was the hdd, nothing else. When its apart it only drops to 45, with everything put together it runs at 50 at idle. I did read somewhere that the cpu temp threshold could be set to low, I havent gotten into my bios yet. It was doing the same thing before u changed the hdd, not sure if both hdds are causing it but not ruling it out, I just dont want to change out another hdd and have it do it again, so far the thing has been on for 3 hours and hasnt shut off, I removed the monitor and have it hooked up to my tv, the rest of the laptop is put back together just none of the screw are installed, it seems that when I put it back together it starts to shut off at random, just doesnt make any sense to me. It also seems to be something common with certain dell laptops
