I'm searching for a laptop for my sister - she only browses the web, but likes to have a lot of tabs open, including few HD videos from YouTube. She also wants the computer to last for at least 5 years. I was looking at Lenovo's, given their reliability reputation. Looks like I'm choosing between G500 and G500C.

CPU wise, I'm deciding between i3-3110M 2.4 Ghz & i5-3230M 2.6 Ghz. From the research I've done looks like there is almost no benefit to add few bucks for i5. Is that correct? Or maybe with future Windows versions, it would be wise to throw in an i5?

RAM wise, I have an option of 8 vs 12 GB. Will there be any benefit of 12 GB, or is it going to actually slow the computer down? I know there isn't any need for more than 8GB for the moment for that kind of use, but like I said I need to think future wise and have in mind future Windows versions (for the moment I'm going to install either 7 or 8, not sure yet).

Or maybe I should sacrifice 500GB of HDD and add a Hybrid Drive with 8GB of SSD? What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance.

The main difference between these two processors is "Turbo boost", which clock the processor up faster based on the number of cores in use and heat. The Intel Core i5-3230M has it and the Intel Core i3-3110M doesnt have it.

The i5 3230M can run up to 3.20 GHz using Turbo Boost.

So, I think the i5 is definately worth it. And, 8 GB is enough. I think you will be fine with 1 TB HDD, without SSD.
