HDMI - VGA adapter (not converter).

Hello,

About 14 years ago, just before hanging my vastly expensive, low resolution 42" plasma screen on a wall, I buried all the cables I thought I could possibly need in the wall. Really neat job, but a couple of weeks later, HDMI was announced

What I'm after is an adapter (not a converter) that I can hook on either end of a long VGA/monitor cable that I burried in there, and use it as a bog standard HDMI cable.

I've found loads of VGA- HDMI converters that seem to work with varying degrees of success. This is not what I'm after. I just want a passive adapter.

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

So, 19 vs 15 pins. I don't think it will work.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Alex :- looking at the HDMI pinouts, there are a couple of unused cores and multiple grounds, so you could get by not having to need 19 cores.

Americanaudiophile :- thanks. There is so much stuff out there, unless you stumble across it, you would never know it existed. When searching for stuff on t'intertubes, it often seems the closer you get, the further away you can end up, just by getting the terminology slightly wrong. However, I should have been able to guess that one!!

VGA is analog HDMI is digital. No way to get one connection to another without an active adapter. It does not matter if you can get the cable pins to line up, or make custom cables or really really want it to work, it's the signal sent though it that needs to be changed.

No, you're missing the point. I do not want to convert the signal from VGA to HDMI or vice versa. I appreciate one is analogue and the other is digital.

All I want to do is use the existing cable buried in the wall as an HDMI cable, to connect two HDMI devices. Hence me asking for an adapter, not a converter.

Can't run an HDMI signal though a VGA cable. I don't even know in what situations a standard VGA to HDMI like that would work.

Your first problem is how many wires in your vga cable. It might be but probable is not 15. It could be as few as 6. Probably some other number. With out this information the hope of getting a working adapter is slim. It would have been nice is all VGA cable were equal but they are not.
