I want to get a gaming laptop but not sure how much graphic and processing power i will actually need, I know in a desktop an i5 is the sweet sot but is that true for a laptop as well? I am looking at one with an i5-4200M with a 740M graphics chip.
Actually laptop cpus are pretty weak considered to desktop cpus. But i5 4200m is a nice cpu and enough to run games at good settings. Although that gpu, gt 740m is not much of a good gpu but 4200m and gt 740m can run games at high-medium (mostly medium). Yet, considered it as a laptop you can't really expect much given the price. But that's still enough rig to play games on reasonable settings.

What about an i7-4700MQ and 755M graphics?
Yea, that's much better than the 4200m cpu. Gpu is also better. I would say to get the laptop with gt 755m gpu.
