Hi everybody!
It's my first time here, so I'll start with a little presentation.
I'm Davide, 19, from Italy, so forgive me for my bad English.
I've always been into computers, since the age of 3, when I wrote my first words using Word 6.0 on Win 95. Anyway, I'm very passionate of many subjects (e.g. :mechanics, electronics, philosophy, music...) as I'm quite curious.
I'm hoping to have a pleasant and collaborative period in this awesome forum. It's one of the most complete and "fresh" I've ever seen. Congratulations!
Let's go straight to the point now.
I have a 13-year-old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600, with 512MB SDR, 80.0 GB IDE HDD.
A few years ago, due to a sudden voltage change, the MoBo burnt out.
I ordered a spare one on eBay, used but tested working, and I replaced the old one.
Now the laptop is working, but it doesn't recognize the DVDROM drive. I'm sure it's in working conditions, as I tested it on another old Toshiba I have. I also switched the units of the two laptop without luck.
When installed, the unit light blinks, the tray works, and if a CD is put inside, it spins.
Even though, nor the BIOS nor Win XP seem to "see" the drive. Even if I try to boot from a cd, it says "Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready...".
I already tried upgrading the BIOS.
Last thing to say, I even bought a second MoBo, from another seller. No differences.
Do I have to start searching for a good exorcist? :D

I hope to have written somethind at least understandable...

Have a nice day!
Davide

so if it spins means the power connector is plugged in ok, and if the drive works in another laptop it has to be the data connector or controller or some weird settings. getting 2 motherboards with the same defect would be too much of a coincidence... and the bios upgrade took care or any settings mismatch since it reset the bios too.

here's a thought, maybe the drive doesn't go in all the way when you insert it in the chassis.

Hi laviniu and thank you very much for your prompt answer.
I'm now writing from the Toshiba of which we're talking about.
unfortunately, the drive inserts perfectly in the chassis, and the connector plugs solidly in.
The power and data connector are together in a unique piece, so if one's plugged in correctly, then the other one is, too.
I'm having no luck with that laptop. I have no clue about what the issue is.

TIA,
Davide
